Box Score 2 WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Two Allegheny seniors marked their final collegiate spring training trip by playing key roles in a 3-0, game one win for the Allegheny baseball team in an eventual split against Ramapo College on Friday morning. The Roadrunners would come back to take game two, 3-2, holding off a late Gator rally at the Chain of Lakes Complex.
Senior
Mike Pezzone ripped a game-winning, two-RBI single into left field in the sixth inning of game one, opening the door for fellow fourth year
Kyle Davis to complete a stellar, complete-game, three-hit shutout. The senior pitcher closed out the Allegheny win, his second of the season, with only 72 pitches, striking out five to follow his electric, career-high 11 strikeout outing against Gallaudet on Mar. 16 that earned him North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Pitcher of the Week accolades.
In game two, junior
Steven Ramsdell picked up his first loss of a season, snapping a streak of three consecutive outings with a victory. The junior pitched 5.1 innings, only giving up five hits and allowing all three runs in the fifth, two via a Ramapo home run, while shutting the door on the Roadrunner offense during the rest of his outing. The Gators only tallied three hits during the game, as freshman
Sean Green grabbed a team-high two hits to go along with a hit by fellow first year
Robert DiMaggio.
On the front end of the doubleheader, Davis did not allow a single runner into scoring position during his six-inning complete game outing, assisted by a pair of Allegheny double plays. Junior
Eric Weyant set a new career-high with six assists during the first game. Davis helped his own cause with a base hit on the first pitch of the fourth, but the Gators were unable to pick up a run in the frame, setting the stage for the sixth inning dramatics.,
Senior
Shane Regel led off the inning with a walk to put the first runner aboard, followed by Weyant, who reached first on a bunt single up the right field line. With freshman
Jacob Shick pinch running at second, Pezzone dropped a one-out single into left field, allowing Shick and Weyant to cross the plate for the first runs of the contest. In the next at bat, the Ramapo pitcher sent a strike past the catcher's mitt and to the backstop, opening the door for Pezzone to reach home and give the Gators a three-run lead entering the final inning. Davis clinched the win with a nine-pitch seventh, forcing a pair of groundouts and a fielder's choice to give the Gators the win.
In game two, Green led off the top of the third with a deep double to left center, moving over to third after a sacrifice bunt by DiMaggio. With one out, Weyant laced a ground ball to the Roadrunner shortstop, who was unable to corral the ball in tie to make the throw to first, scoring Green and giving Allegheny a 1-0 lead.
DiMaggio would make another key play in the bottom of the frame, snagging a line shot destined to tie the game with a runner on third to end the Ramapo scoring threat in the inning. After the three-run Ramapo fifth, Allegheny entered the seventh trailing by two. Killian reached base on a one-out fielder's choice, then advanced to third on Green's second hit of the game.
With the tying run on second, DiMaggio brought the Gators one run closer by beating out a single to first base, scoring pinch runner Shick and placing the tying run on third. Ramapo pitcher Tom Portesy closed out the win with a strikeout, salvaging the split for Ramapo.
Allegheny closes the 2014 spring training season with a 5-2 record and enter the home stretch of the season with an 8-4 record. The Gators face a jam-packed week with road games against Thiel (Mar. 26), Mount Union (Mar. 27) and Case Western Reserve (Mar. 29) on the horizon with the squad's home opener against the Spartans slated to take place on Mar. 30.
