Eighth-Inning Rally Clinches Comeback Win

Senior Eric Brandt went the distance for the Gators, pitching 9.0 innings to pick up the complete game win over Ripon on Thursday.
Box Score WINTER HAVEN, Fla – Two eighth-inning runs brought the Gators back from a late deficit while giving the squad their fourth spring break win, 4-3, over Ripon College on Thursday afternoon.

Sophomore Joe Killian picked up a sacrifice fly to right field, bringing home Junior Adam Bronson, who scored a team-high two runs to help Allegheny (7-3 overall) to the victory.  Senior Eric Brandt dazzled from the mound, picking up a complete game win and earning his second win of the season with 9.0 innings of work, giving up eight hits, two earned runs while striking out three without allowing a walk, throwing a wild pitch, or hitting a batter.

The Gators finished the game with four stolen bases, highlighted by an electric double-steal in the sixth by Killian and junior Zach Gray that plated Gray and gut the Ripon lead to one.  Gray would later play an important role in the eighth, pushing Bronson from second to third with a sacrifice bunt to set the stage for Killian's RBI in the next at bat.  Gray, Killian, Bronson and senior Kyle Davis ended the game with one hit each.

After getting out of a two-out jam with a runner in scoring position during the top of the first, Brandt settled in, retiring eight consecutive batters before two hits in the fourth started the scoring for Ripon.  Trailing by one in the bottom of the fourth, Bronson led off the inning by being hit by a pitch, moving to third after a Ripon error before scoring on a double play by Killian.

Ripon would add two runs in the fifth on a pair of hits, holding the Gators scoreless in the bottom of the frame before the Allegheny bats came alive in the sixth.  Gray and Killian notched back-to-back singles, with Gray advancing to third on a hit-and-run play to put runners at the corners with two outs.

On the first pitch of sophomore Matt Sardini's at bat, Killian took off for second and was apparently caught in a run down before Ripon attempted to throw out Gray, who made a delayed break for home.  The throw was not in time and both runners were safe with Allegheny coming one run closer to the Ripon lead.

The Gators threatened in the bottom of the seventh, putting Frazier at third with two outs, but Allegheny was unable to cash in on the opportunity.  Brandt responded with a five-pitch inning, sending the Gators back to the plate in the eighth with a chance to tie or take the lead outright.

Pezzone opened the inning by earning a walk after facing a 1-2 count.  Bronson singled back to the pitcher, advancing the senior to second to put two runners on with no outs.  The Gators tied the game when Pezzone broke for third on the first pitch to Gray.  Pezzone reached the base and the ball skidded into the outfield, giving the senior the opportunity to advance to home and tie the game.  Allegheny took the lead when Killian launched a soaring fly ball to right to score Bronson.

After allowing a single to right center to put the lead off runner on base for Ripon in the bottom of the ninth, Bronson forced a second-pitch pop up to retire the first batter of the inning.  Bronson eliminated the scoring threat during the next at bat, catching the runner stealing from first to bring the Red Hawks to their final out.  Brandt forced a game-ending groundout to clinch the game and the fourth win of spring break for the Gators.

Allegheny will close out the spring break schedule on Friday, as the Gators will battle New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) member Ramapo in a double header set to start at 9 a.m.
