Offensive Outburst Holds as Gators Beat Bobcats

Senior Mike Pezzone went 2-for-5, recording a single, triple and RBI while taking part in a seven-run third inning that sent the Gators past the Pitt-Greensburg Bobcats, 9-5 on Sunday.
Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Allegheny offense combined for nine runs over four innings, as the Gators were able to close out their three-game trip to North Carolina with a 2-1 record following a 9-5 win over Pitt-Greensburg on Sunday morning at J.P. Riddle Stadium.

Junior Steven Ramsdell picked up the win for the Gators, his second victory of the season, after throwing 8.0 innings with five strikeouts, allowing four runs on 10 hits.  Sophomore Matt Sardini and freshman Ian Frazier tied for a team-high two RBI, with Frazier tacking on a stolen base.  Allegheny combined for 12 hits, as Sardini, seniors Kyle Davis and Mike Pezzone, juniors Zach Gray and Eric Weyant recorded two hits apiece.

Gray led off the second inning with a deep double to left center field, advancing to third on the throw.  Sardini cut the Pitt-Greensburg lead to 2-1 with a sharp line drive to right center, bringing home Gray to score the Gators' first run of the contest.

The Allegheny bats came alive in the third inning, using the momentum of a 1-2-3 inning by Ramsdell to take a six-run lead by the end of the frame.  Frazier led off the inning with a walk, stealing second before being pushed over to third with a groundout by Weyant.  With Davis at bat, Frazier scored on a passed ball by Pitt-Greensburg.  Davis reached base with a single to right center field, advancing to second on another Bobcat miscue. After an infield single to short by Pezzone and a walk to Killian, Gray would drive in Davis with a scorching single to left field.  Sardini would continue the hit parade, bringing home Pezzone with a single to center.

Freshman Jacob Shick picked up his fourth RBI of the weekend with a single to short, beating out the throw at first for the Gators' fifth hit of the inning, allowing Gray to score.  After Bronson was hit by a pitch, Frazier brought home Sardini and Shick with a drive to center field.  In total, the Gators would score seven run on seven hits in the third, taking an 8-2 lead heading into the bottom of the frame.

Ramsdell continued his strong performance early in the game, shaking off the early two runs by the Bobcats to retire seven consecutive batters between the first and fourth innings.  Pezzone led off the Allegheny fourth with a triple that hit the wall in left center, scoring on a groundout by Killian, who picked up a RBI on the play.

Both teams settled down offensively after the Gators scored all nine runs in the first four innings, as the Allegheny pitching took over after the Bobcats early offense.  Ramsdell did not allow a runner into scoring position until the seventh inning, when Pitt-Greensburg scored a run after picking up three hits in the frame.

In the eighth, the Bobcats scored a run on three hits, but the play of the inning came from left field, as Pezzone threw out a runner at home from left field to end the inning and the Bobcat scoring threat, which placed three runners in scoring position during the inning.  Junior Paul Vojtek came to the mound in the ninth, and the Bobcats picked up a run on two hits.  With a runner on first and one out, Weyant started a 6-4-3 double play that ended the game and gave the Gators the victory,

Allegheny will next battle State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) member Fredonia State at Pullman Park in Butler, Pa. for a Mar. 8 double-header before traveling to Florida for five games in Winter Haven from Mar. 16-21.
