Winning Streak Halted by Oswego State Offense

Junior Eric Weyant picked up a team-high three hits against Oswego State on Mar. 18.
Box Score AUBURNDALE, Fla. – After senior Mike Pezzone picked up his third RBI of Allegheny's spring break schedule to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh, the Oswego State Lakers recorded seven runs on eight hits over the final two innings to hand the Gators their first loss in March and snap a four-game winning streak, 10-3, on Tuesday evening at Lake Myrtle Sports Complex.

Junior Eric Weyant led the Gators with five hits, finishing the game going 3-for-5 with a run scored.  Pezzone, junior Zach Gray and sophomore Matt Sardini each drove in a run, as Gray also picked up a pair of hits.  Senior Brandon Ellis started the game, pitching 5.0 innings, allowing two earned runs while striking out five.

Both teams traded defensive highlights over the first several innings, started by Pezzone, who gunned out an Oswego runner at second after a single to end the inning and an early scoring threat by the Lakers.  After the Gators were retired in order after Oswego State converted a double play, Weyant returned the favor with one out in the second, flipping a caught line drive to Davis, who finished the double play to end the Oswego second.

Back-to-back hits by Killian and Gray put two aboard with no outs in the third, but the Gators were unable to convert a run out of three hits in the inning, leaving the bases loaded and the game scoreless.  Weyant started another inning-ending double play in the bottom of the third, ending the frame with a 6-4-3 double play.

The Allegheny bats came alive in the fourth, as a walk to Davis and Pezzone's hit by pitch put two aboard with one out. Killian reached first on a fielder's choice to put runners at the corners with two outs.  Gray and Sardini assured the Gators would not remain scoreless, as back-to-back two-out singles gave the Gators a 2-0 lead in the inning.  After an Allegheny error, Oswego would grab a run in the top of the fifth, but another double play would end the threat.

Oswego tied the game with two outs in the fifth inning, taking the lead on Allegheny's second error of the evening.  In the bottom of the seventh, Weyant led off the inning with a sharp line drive to center field.  After being pushed to second base after a bunt by Davis, Pezzone brought home the Allegheny junior with a sacrifice fly to center, tying the game with two outs in the inning.

The Lakers picked up four runs on four hits in the eighth inning, including a pair of extra base hits, to take a 7-3 lead into the ninth after the Allegheny eighth was retired in order.  Oswego added three runs in the top of the ninth to take a 10-3 lead.

The Gator offense started to gain momentum in the bottom of the inning, as junior Adam Bronson was walked to put a runner aboard.  After Weyant's third hit of the game was followed by Davis being hit by a pitch, the Gators loaded the bases with only one out.  However, Allegheny was unable to plate a run in the inning, as the Oswego bullpen was able to clinch the seven-run victory.

Now 3-1 in their slated seven-game schedule in Florida and 4-1 in their last five games, the Gators will next battle Ripon at 11:30 on Thursday, Mar. 20 before closing their trip to Florida with a double header against Ramapo on Mar. 21.
