Doubleheader Sweep Kicks Off Spring Break

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – After watching an early lead slip away, the Allegheny bats came alive in extra innings to help the Gators open their 2014 Spring Break trip with a pair of wins over Gallaudet on Sunday evening.  The Gators won a back-and-forth affair in the opener, 10-9, in 10 innings before a career-high 11 strikeouts by senior Kyle Davis highlighted a 7-1 win in the nightcap.

In game one, senior Mike Pezzone and junior Eric Weyant tied for a team-high three hits.  Pezzone tacked on two RBI, including the eventual game-winning hit with a triple in the 10th.  Junior Adam Bronson picked up a team-high three RBI on a home run in the first inning.  Sophomore Joe Killian and freshman Ian Frazier notched a pair of hits and a stolen base a piece while senior Kyle Davis, sophomore Matt Sardini and freshman Jacob Shick picked up a hit each.  Pezzone closed out a strong first game with his first win of the season, while freshman Corey Keenan earned his first save with a scoreless 10th to close the door on the Bison's comeback hopes.

Davis' 11-strikeout performance surpassed his previous career-high of eight strikeouts, as the senior recovered from an early run in the first to shut the door on the Bison bats, allowing five hits over seven innings and only walking one batter.  Junior Ben Murray picked up a game-high three RBI with a bases loaded-clearing triple while Davis helped his own cause of a game-high three hits.  Senior Shane Regel picked up two hits, adding an RBI while playing all seven innings behind the mound.

The Gators erupted for six runs on five hits in the first inning, capped by a three-run home run by Bronson. Allegheny opened the inning with two hits in the first three team at-bats, led off by a single by Weyant.  A double to left by Pezzone brought home Weyant for the Gators' first run of the afternoon, as a single to center by Shick later brought home Pezzone and Killian, who earlier in the inning singled down the left field line.

With Shick and Sardini aboard, Bronson took an 0-1 pitch to left center field with the wind blowing towards the fences, providing the ball with just enough distance to clear the tall outfield fence, bringing the Allegheny lead to six and completing the scoring for the inning.

Gallaudet tied the game in the fourth after scoring in the second, third and fourth innings.  Alletheny took the lead back on a single by Killian to center field, which brought home Davis for the leading run.  The Gators took a two-run advantage on a squeeze play by Sardini, who placed the ball down the left field line while Pezzone came racing down the baseline.  The Bison throw was beat out by the Allegheny senior, who dove towards the right side of the plate and managed to graze his hand over home to score for the Gators.

After the Bison scored two runs to tie the game once again in the bottom of the frame, the two teams played to a stalemate heading into extra frames.  The Gators held Gallaudet without a run in the seventh despite the Bison placing the winning run aboard with two outs.  Boyer finished his two-inning outing with no runs on four hits, including the critical outs to force the game into extras.

Frazier led off the eighth with a single to left field, heading to third after a Gallaudet miscue on a Weyant bunt up the right field line.  Killian beat out a fielder's choice to first base with one out, denying the Bison a double play while allowing Frazier to score, giving the Gators the lead back in the eighth.  The resilient Bison once again tied the contest with one run on two hits in the bottom of the frame.

With Davis aboard after forcing a walk, Pezzone once again utilized the wind at his back to launch a deep drive to center field, just over the glove of the diving Bison outfielder to give Allegheny a 10-9 lead.  Keenan ended the game in the bottom of the frame with a 12-pitch 10th, striking out all three batters to pick up the first save of his collegiate career.

Gallaudet opened the scoring in game two after a leadoff hit turned into a run on a double play ball.  Davis tied the game in the third with a single to center field, scoring Regel, who led off the inning with a double to center field.  Regel would add an RBI on his own the following inning, sparking a two-run fourth with a single to center that scored junior Zach Gray, who finished 1-for-2 with a RBI and two runs.

Frazier tacked on a run in the inning with a double down the left field line, scoring Regel to give the Gators a 4-1 lead.  Murray blasted his three-run triple on a 1-0 pitch with Sardini, Killian and Gray aboard, scoring all three and sending the Gators to a six run lead.  Davis closed out the game by striking out the final two batters of the game, tying the highest Gator total over the last four seasons in the process.

The Gators will next battle Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) member Hope at 1 p.m. on Mar. 16.
