Late-Inning Frostburg State Rally Stuns Gators

Sophomore Matt Sardini picked up a team- and career-high three stolen bases against Frostburg State on Friday evening.
Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.-- In a wild contest that saw 23 runs, 25 hits, a late rally and a 20-minute delay due to electrical failure, the Gators were unable to withstand a determined offensive rally by Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) member Frostburg State, as the Bobcats defeated the Gators, 13-12, in 11 innings at J.P. Riddle Stadium on Saturday evening.

In their first 11-inning contest since an 8-7 win over Grove City on Apr. 13, 2010, The Gators (2-2 overall) plated runs in each of the first four innings.  Junior Eric Weyant picked up a team-high three hits, finishing the evening 3-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored.  Nine different Allegheny players recorded hits, as sophomore Joe Killian drove in three runs on two hits, tying senior Mike Pezzone, who hit a home run for the Gators in the first inning, for the team-high.

Freshman Jacob Shick scored a pair of RBI during his two-hit outing, while freshman Matt Sardini finished the contest with two hits and three stolen bases, setting a new career-high.  Juniors Zach Gray and Ben Murray each recorded an RBI for the Gators.  Pezzone took the loss for the Gators in his first plate appearance of the season.

In the first, Shick forced a walk to put the first runner on base for the Gators.  Pezzone then opened the evening's scoring with a monster home run that landed over the fence in left center field.  The blast was the third of Pezzone's career and his first since the 2012 season, giving Allegheny an early, 2-0 lead in the first.  Weyant would tack on a run for the Gators in the second, lacing a line drive in the right center gap to score junior Adam Bronson, who was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning.

The Bobcats, who maintained their undefeated start to the season with the victory, cut the lead to 3-2 after scoring a pair of runs on two Gator errors in the bottom of the second.  In the third inning, Sardini picked up a two-out walk, moving himself into scoring position with the first of his three stolen bases.  Murray brought home Sardini with a looping single down the right field line, providing the Gators an additional run and a 4-2 lead.

After Weyant scored in the fourth on a Frostburg State error, Allegheny erupted for four runs in the sixth inning and three in the seventh to take a 12-5 lead.  In the sixth, back-to-back singles by Weyant and Shick put two runners aboard with one out.  After a double steal put both runners in scoring position, Killian ripped a deep double to right center, scoring both runners.  Gray would bring Killian home after a double to left, scoring the Gators' fourth run of the inning after another Frostburg State miscue.  Sardini, who reached base on the error, stole two more bases to put himself at third base, but the Gators were unable to bring in a fifth run in the sixth.

A single by Bronson and double down the left field line by freshman Ian Frazier kicked off the seventh, as Weyant was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs.  Shick sent a pitch up the middle to score Frazier and Bronson.  Later in the inning, Killian gave the Gators a seven-run, 12-5 lead with a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Weyant.
Freshman Zach Hale entered the game for the Gators in the seventh to relieve starter Kyle Davis, retiring the Bobcats in order.

The Frostburg State rally began in the eighth, as the Bobcats closed the gap to 12-9 with a four-run, five-hit inning.  Frostburg State would complete the rally in the ninth, tying the game at 12-12 after a lead-off triple gave the Bobcats an opening to score the game-tying run with one out in the frame.  With the winning run at second base, the left field lights malfunctioned, causing a near 30-minute delay.  The Bobcats were still able to make the game-tying play in the ninth, pushing the Gators into their first extra-inning affair since an Apr. 27 meeting with the Wooster Fighting Scots.

Allegheny was retired in order to start the 10th inning, as the Bobcats threatened with the winning run on second base and one out.  Gray nabbed a well-hit ground ball just to the right of second base, stepping on the bag before throwing out the runner at first for an inning-ending, 4-3 double play, sending the Gators to their longest game since 2010.

Sardini bunted a single to lead off the 11th before Bronson and Weyant walked to load the bases with two outs.  The Gators were unable to convert a run out of the opportunity, and Frostburg State ended the game with a two-out single up the middle.

The Gators will return to J.P. Riddle Stadium for their final game in Fayetteville, batting the Bobcats of Pitt-Greensburg at 10 a.m.
