Pitching, Baserunning Spark Gators to Victory

Junior Eric Weyant picked up two hits, an RBI and a stolen base in Allegheny's 4-2 win over William Peace on Friday.
Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Senior Eric Brandt registered a strong outing for the Gators in his first start of the season, sparking a pair of strong pitching performances that sent the Gators to a 4-2 victory over William Peace on Friday evening at J.P. Riddle Stadium.

The 1-2-3 hitters in the Allegheny lineup, led off by junior Eric Weyant and rounded out by seniors Kyle Davis and Mike Pezzone, posted two hits a piece, a team-high, while Weyant knocked in the eventual game-winning run for the Gators.  Freshman Jacob Shick drove in his fourth RBI of the season, finishing the evening 1-for-3 with a run scored.

Gator baserunners recorded a strong evening, finishing with five total stolen bases as Pezzone, Weyant, freshman Ian Frazier along with sophomores Joe Killian and Matt Sardini each picked up a stolen base a piece.  Freshman Chase Boyer picked up his first collegiate save with a three-inning outing out of the bullpen.

Brandt allowed an early run in the top of the first and faced a third-inning threat as the Pacers placed runners on first and second with no outs.  The senior worked his way out of a jam when junior Zach Gray ended the inning by snagging a line drive that seemed destined for the outfield, closing out the William Peace first.  Brandt would overcome another jam in the third, picking off the leadoff runner before retiring the batters in order, setting the stage for an Allegheny rally in the bottom of the frame.

Frazier led off the bottom of the third with a scalding single to center field before stealing second.  The freshman scored on a long double to right center field by Weyant, tying the game, 1-1.  The Gators took the lead after Killian reached on an error by the William Peace shortstop, providing the opportunity for Weyant to race home and give Allegheny a 2-1 advantage.

After allowing the early run, Brandt settled in and held the Pacers without a run for the rest of his outing.  From the third inning to the fifth, the senior retired eight consecutive batters to hold any William Peace comeback attempt in check.  The senior only allowed one hit over the final three innings of his start, picking up the first win of his senior year in the process.

The Gators tacked on a pair of runs in the sixth, as Sardini led off with a single, then stole second while Shick was at the plate.  The Allegheny designated hitter sent a line shot through the left side, scoring Sardini to give Allegheny a 3-1 lead.  Junior catcher Adam Bronson laid down his second sacrifice bunt of the game to push Shick to third, who then scored on an error by the pitcher later in the inning.

Boyer entered the game for the Gators in the seventh inning, throwing three innings and allowing only one hit during his duration on the mound.  Only one unearned run crossed the plate while Boyer was pitching, as the first year grabbed his first collegiate save, logging one of his two strikeouts in the final inning.

With two outs, a runner aboard and the tying run at the plate, Boyer forced a fly out to center and a pop fly to Bronson in foul territory to clinch the win for the Gators.

Allegheny will continue the three-game stint in Fayetteville on Saturday, when the Gators battle the Bobcats of Frostburg State at 4 p.m.
