Big Red Frontcourt Sends Denison Past Gators

Box Score MEADVILLE, Pa. – A dominant second half by Denison spoiled the Allegheny women's basketball squad's senior day, as the Big Red picked up a 75-38, North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) win over the Gators on Saturday afternoon at the David V. Wise Center.

Outscoring Allegheny, 42-14 in the second half, the Big Red (19-6 overall, 11-5 NCAC) distanced themselves from the Gators (19-6 overall, 11-6 NCAC), who were unable to find an answer to a determined Denison front court that only allowed 10 Allegheny points in the paint.

Sophomore Emma Pellicano led the Gators with 14 points, grabbing five rebounds, a block and a steal.  Junior Kendall Hoffman and sophomore Rachel Vigliotti picked up six points and four rebounds apiece, as Vigliotti's three offensive rebounds helped lead the Gators to 16 total second chance points.  Freshman Meaghan Wilby closed out her first regular season for the Blue and Gold with a four-rebound performance, as fellow first year Jessica Aulicino pulled down three boards.  Sophomore Jessica Mrdenovich led the Gators with four assists.

Turnovers cost the Gators in the first half, as eight Allegheny turnovers led to 10 Denison points, spotting the Big Red a 33-24 advantage at the break.  With 12:27 remaining in the first half, Pellicano buried a three-pointer from the left arc to cut the Denison advantage to 15-13.  The Big Red responded with a 16-2 run, taking a 31-15 lead with 2:59 left in the first.  A jumper by Vigliotti in the paint with 21 seconds remaining brought the Gators to within single digits, capping a half-ending, 9-3 run for the Gators.

Allegheny was held without a field goal for the first two minutes of the second half, as Vigliotti hit a jumper with 18:06 remaining to bring the Gators to within 11 at 37-26.  A three-pointer by Wilby with 11:26 remaining halted an 11-2 Denison run, but a fast break layup by Vigliotti was the final field goal that the Gators would score until the 5:06 mark of the game, by which time the Big Red were able to build a 31-point advantage.

Prior to the beginning of the game, Allegheny head coach Kate Costanzo and the women's basketball program paid homage to a pair of seniors participating in their final game for the Blue and Gold.  Senior guard Ally Weiner, a four-year member of the squad, and student assistant coach Kendra Pilarski were honored by the squad on Saturday afternoon.

The Gators, who clinched their spot in the NCAC Tournament, will return to familiar ground on Feb. 25 when they will battle Denison once again in the NCAC Tournament Quarterfinals.
