Joe Killian and freshman
Jacob Shick propelled the Gators to a season-opening split against John Carroll on Saturday afternoon. Allegheny rebounded from a 12-6 loss in game one to upend the Blue Streaks, 12-2, in the second contest between the two squads.
Killian, the reigning North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Newcomer of the Year, finished the second game tied with Shick with a team-high three RBI, as Shick fell a triple shy of the cycle. Sophomore

Mike Pezzone and junior
Zach Gray picked up one RBI apiece. Freshmen
Ian Frazier and
Robert DiMaggio picked up their first collegiate hit, as Frazier tacked on an RBI for the Gators against John Carroll.
Junior
Steven Ramsdell earned the game two win after going 5.2 innings, striking out four and only allowing 10 runners on base. Senior
Eric Brandt along with freshmen
Zach Hale and
Chase Boyer entered the game in relief, combining to only allow two hits over the final 3.1 innings of the contest for the Gators.
The Gators scored their first run of game two when senior
Kyle Davis, who forced a walk in his first at bat of the game, was brought home after Gray forced a bases-loaded walk after Pezzone and Killian were hit by a pitch. Allegheny did the most damage in the second inning, when the squad scored six runs on three hits and four walks.
Junior
Adam Bronson started the second with a walk before Frazier pushed the starting catcher to second with a sacrifice ground out. Walks to junior
Eric Weyant and Davis loaded the bases before a third consecutive walk to Pezzone brought in Bronson. Killian grabbed his first RBI of the game with a single to the third baseman before a single to left by Sardini and a double to left center by Shick each drove in two runs apiece.
Shick led off the bottom of the fifth with a monster home run to left field before Allegheny picked up three additional runs in the sixth. A lead-off double by Pezzone led to a run after Killian brought the senior home. Sardini would advance to second on an error by the John Carroll third baseman, scoring Killian. Frazier drove home Shick, who also singled in the inning, to score the team's third run of the sixth.
Killian would cap off the Allegheny scoring with an inside-the-park home run in the bottom of the seventh. Sending a deep drive to center field, Killian was able to round the bases and beat a play at the plate to score his first collegiate home run.
In game one, John Carroll would pick up six runs in the first inning to take an early advantage, holding on for the 12-6 win. Sardini would go 2-for-4 in that game, tacking on a pair of stolen bases to compliment two RBI. Gray went 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI while Killian finished 1-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. The Gators would plate three runs in the fifth and two in the seventh, but were unable to overcome the early deficit against the Blue Streaks.
Allegheny will next travel to Fayetteville, N.C. for three games, battling William Peace at 6 p.m. on Feb. 8 before a 4 p.m. meeting with Frostburg State on Mar. 1 and a 10 a.m. tilt against Pitt-Greensburg on Mar. 2.
