Gators Top Wolverines to Extend Winning Streak

GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Allegheny women's basketball team moved its winning streak to six games by closing out its non-conference portion of the 2014-15 schedule with a 66-47 victory at Grove City.

Offensively, three players scored in double figures for Allegheny (8-2), led by Emma Pellicano's 17 points, while defensively, the Gators forced 20 Grove City (2-5) turnovers and limited the hosts to just a 32 percent shooting effort from the floor.

Reigning Allegheny Athlete of the Week Jessica Mrdjenovich added 14 points and a game-high seven rebounds, while Kaitlyn Fromknecht went 4-for-5 from the floor and 2-for-2 from the foul line to chip in 10 points.  In all, nine different players found the scoresheet for the Gators, who are on their longest winning streak since the 2006-07 squad won eight consecutive contests.

The Gators and Wolverines shared the lead over the opening five minutes of play, before a jumper by Ifeyinwa Uwazie kick started a 10-0 run that featured four points apiece from Fromknecht and Pellicano and gave Allegheny an 18-9 lead with 10:45 remaining in the first half.

Allegheny continued to control play over the latter stages of the first half, with a pair of Fromknecht baskets pushing the lead to 13, 26-13, with just under four minutes left.  Grove City twice cut the gap to 10, before Harper Zimmer and Pellicano scored the final points of the half to give the Gators a 30-16 lead at the break.

Over the opening half, the Gators shot a healthy 50 percent (14-for-28) from the field, while Grove City managed to connect on only seven of 30 attempts, and just three field goals over the final 11:18.

The hosts began to chip away at the deficit over the opening minutes of the second half, eventually closing the gap to 10, 36-26, with 13:09 left in regulation.  However, Allegheny quickly answered back, with Rachel Vigliotti connecting on a lay up and Pellicano a three-pointer in a 50-second span to increase the lead to 41-26 with 11:30 remaining.

After a conventional three-point play by Pellicano pushed the advantage to 48-32 with just under seven minutes to go, the Wolverines mounted a final push, eventually closing the gap to 10, 53-43, with 3:30 left.   Mrdjenovich and Meaghan Wilby then combined to put the game out of reach for good for the Gators, with the former scoring six points and the latter five over the final three minutes to seal the 19-point win.

In addition to her strong night offensively, Fromknecht blocked a season-high five shots and grabbed six rebounds.  Coming off of a career game in the Gators' win at Houghton on Saturday, Wilby finished the night at Grove City with seven points and six rebounds.  Marina Scarantino dished out a game-high five assists, with teammate Kendall Hoffman adding four helpers to go with three steals.

Grove City was led by 11 points and seven rebounds from Cayley McLean, and 10 points and five steals by Kathryn Erbelding.

Allegheny will now face a quick turnaround, as they will return to action on Wednesday night when they welcome North Coast Athletic Conference rival Kenyon to the David V. Wise Center for a 7:30 p.m. contest.  The final game of the semester for the Gators, the team will also celebrate Camper Reunion Night, as it welcomes back all participants of its summer camp.
