HIRAM, Ohio- For the second time in as many games, the Gators fell victim to an immensely efficient offensive performance, as the squad dropped a 90-50 decision to the Calvin Knights to kick off the 2014 Terrier Tip-Off Classic at Price Gymnasium.
Reigning Allegheny Female Athlete of the Week
Jessica Mrdjenovich and fellow junior
Emma Pellicano each scored a team-high 11 points to lead the Allegheny offense. Sophomore
Meaghan Wilby tacked on eight rebounds, including four offensive boards, while senior
Kendall Hoffman scored a team-high four assists. Pellicano tacked on a team-high two steals.
As a team, Allegheny shot 35 percent from the floor, but struggled from three-point range, finishing the game shooting 18.8 percent.  In comparison, the Knights knocked down nine three-pointers, ending the evening with a 50.7 shooting percentage. Allegheny scored 14 points off of 11 Calvin turnovers, but the Knights outscored the Gators, 42-26, in the paint. Calvin's Kayla Engelhard led all scorers with 22 points, one of three players to end the game in double digits.
Calvin built a double-digit lead early in the contest, opening the game on a 10-0 run before the Gators scored their first bucket with 15:59 left in the first half. Wilby's jumper sparked a 7-3 run for the Gators to bring the deficit down to six, but Calvin slowly bolstered its lead back to double-digits, leading by as many as 17 during the final stages by the half. A layup at the halftime buzzer sent the Gators to a 44-25 deficit at halftime.
In the second half, the Knights increased their lead to 29 with 10:25 remaining in the half, withstanding an early rush from the Gators that featured a pair of layups by Mrdjenovich in the first two minutes of the second stanza. Calvin continued the incredible day from the field with five three-pointers in the second to keep the Gators away from the Calvin lead until the final buzzer.
Allegheny will look to snap the current two-game skid at 1 p.m. against Albion on Saturday.Â
