GAMBIER, Ohio – Six saves from junior
Jake Pugliese put the Gators in position to potentially draw or even win a road contest against the No. 2 team in the nation, according to the National Soccer Coaches Association of American (NSCAA). But a goal in the 71st minute by Kenyon's Josh Lee ushered the Lords past the Gators, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon in a North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) contest at Mavec Field.
Kenyon (10-0-0, 2-0-0 NCAC) out-shot the Gators (4-6-1, 0-2-0 NCAC), 17-2, while holding an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks. Pugliese made five first half saves as the Allegheny defense was able to weather 11 first half attempts from the Lords. The Gators finished the contest with two total shots, including one on target from freshman
Tolossa Hassan.
In the first half, Pugliese made two of his first half saves within the first four minutes, logging a third in the 19th minute. A shot from senior
Axel Monzon in the 32nd minute of the first half was blocked, the lone opportunity from the Gators in the opening stanza.
A corner kick by senior
Cameron Olson in the 47th minute kicked off the second half for the Gators. Hassan placed a shot on target in the 60th minute, but the momentum stained by Kenyon culminated with a goal in the 71st minute, giving the Lords a 1-0 lead. Kenyon was able to keep the Gators at bay over the final 19 minutes to pick up the win.
Allegheny will next battle Wabash on Sunday, Oct. 12 at Frank B. Fuhrer Field.
