MEADVILLE, Pa. - Unbeaten Wabash scored with just 11 seconds left in the second half to thwart the Gator upset bid and escape Frank B. Fuhrer field with a 4-3 victory.
In a frantic, back-and-forth affair that saw the two teams combine for 34 shots, the Little Giants' Mike Gore broke loose down the sideline and converted on the breakaway with a shot from five yards out to seal the win and shock a sizeable crowd at the Robertson Athletic Complex. The victory impvoed Wabash to a perfect 10-0-2 on the year (3-0-0 NCAC), while the Gators drop to 4-7-1 overall, and 0-3 in conference play.
The Little Giants wasted little time in jumping ahead. as in the seventh minute, Riley Pelton flicked home a through on the doorstep from teammate Steva Magura to take the early 1-0 advantage.
Allegheny answered right back just four minutes later. Following a sustained possession, the Gators were granted a throw-in from the corner deep in Wabash territory.
Liam McNamee fired a long throw toward the cage, and it deflected off of a Wabash defender right to Allegheny's
Cameron Olson, who leaped to catch it in mid-air and volley it in into the cage to tie the game 12:38 into play.
The Gators kept the momentum, and took their first lead of the game just moments later. Following a Wabash foul, the Gators were granted a free kick from 30 yards out.
Axel Monzon sent a hard blast toward the goal, and in heavy traffic,
Stefano Wach out-leaped everyone to get a head on it and direct it into the net to make the score 2-1 at the 16:32 mark.
Wabash then countered, upping the pressure over the next several minutes, taking three corner kicks and four of the next five shots. Gator goalkeeper
Jake Pugliese stood tall, making a pair of saves over the span, before the Little Giants tied it up in the closing moments of the half. On a rush down field, Francisco Trejo split the Gator defense and one-timed a through ball past Pugliese to make the score 2-2 with 4:19 remaining in the opening stanza.
Allegheny had a pair of chances late, racking two shots and taking one corner kick in the final two minutes of the half, but was unable to cash in, and the game remained tied at the half.
Play was even and fast-paced in the opening stages of the second half, with each team taking four shots and two corner kicks in a scoreless opening 15 minutes. The visitors took advantage of a Gator foul in the 63rd minute to jump back in front, as Ivalyo Mantchev blasted a free kick through the defense and into the net's lower 90 to give Wabash a 3-2 lead.
The Gators then upped their offensive pressure, maitaning possession for a number of long stretches in Little Giant territory. With 9:26 left in regulation, Monzon sent a through ball toward the goal box, catching teammte
Tolossa Hassan in mid stride. The rookie took a quick touch and buried it for his first career goal to tie the game at 3-all.
Allegheny continued to apply offensive pressure as the second half wound down, taking a pair of corner kicks and posting two shots on goal, but both were turned aside by Wabash keeper Dayton Jennings to keep the game tied. As overtime appeared inevitable, the Little Giants' Mike Gore gathered a pass from Trejo from 30 yards out. Knifing through the Gator defense, Gore converted on the breakaway with just 11 seconds left in regulation to preserve his squad's unbeaten season, and shock the Allegheny partisan crowd.
For the game, Wabash owned a 19-15 advantage in shots, and a slim 6-4 margin in corner kicks. Jennings earned the win in goal for Wabash, making four saves, while Pugliese stopped five shots in a losing effort.
The Gators will return to action on Wed. Oct. 15, when they travel to NCAC foe Hiram for a 7:30 p.m. bout.
