GREENCASTLE, Ind. – A goal in the 67th minute by senior
Stefano Wach snapped a scoreless tie and gave Allegheny a 1-0, North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) win over DePauw on Saturday at Reavis Stadium.
Wach's second goal of the week, the first scored during Allegheny's 5-1 win over Wooster on Tuesday, pushed the Gators past the Tigers for the first time in program history. Heading into Saturday's matchup with DePauw, Allegheny held an 0-3-0 record against the Tigers, but Wach's tally was enough to provide Allegheny's second historic benchmark of the week, following a win on Tuesday that made head coach
Angelo Panzetta the program's new leader in career coaching wins.
After 66 minutes of scoreless play between the two squads, sophomore
Jonas Skattum placed a cross towards the penalty area. The attempt found its target in Wach, who was able to slip the shot past the DePauw goalkeeper to give the Gators the lead.
Junior
Jake Pugliese picked up the second blank sheet of his career, making four saves to help the Gators to consecutive wins for the first time since mid-September. Each team took 11 shots and Allegheny was able to procure a 7-to-6 advantage in corner kicks, but the Gators were able to break through in the second half for their second NCAC win of the 2014 campaign.
Sophomore
Nick Dias placed a header on target for the Gators in the fourth minute, but DePauw goalkeeper Jake Pezzuto saved the shot. Allegheny kept the pressure on the Tigers in the opening moments of the contest, as seniors
Cameron Olson,
Daniel Szekely alongside freshman
Tolossa Hassan took shots before the 12th minute, capped by an attempt by Olson in the 11th that warranted a save by Pezzuto.
Pugliese did not have to make a save in the first, as Hassan generated a chance in the 32nd before Allegheny sophomore
Zach Stryker took the final attempt for the Gators in the half with a shot in the 39th, sending the two squads into the half at a 0-0 stalemate.
The tables turned in the second Stanza as Pugliese began to see attempts by the DePauw offense. The junior made a half-opening save 25 seconds after the whistle and withstood three consecutive corner kick attempts between the 58th and 61st minute, keeping the contest scoreless.
Allegheny started to regain momentum in the 67th minute to lead up to the goal. Freshman
Bryce Evans tallied a shot on target to give the Gators a corner kick opportunity in the 67th minute. Skattum took the corner, but the clearing attempt by DePauw returned the ball to the sophomore. Skattum crossed the ball gain to find Wach, giving the Gators the lead with his fourth goal of the season.
DePauw attempted to tie the game quickly, sending a shot on target in the 69th that was saved by Pugliese. The junior made saves in the 76th and 78th minute to keep the lead intact. The Gators kept the ball out of their zone in the final moments of the game, culminating in a chance by Szekely in the 87th minute that hit the post. DePauw would not register another offensive attempt for the remainder of the contest, as the Allegheny defense rendered the Tigers without a shot over the final 9:21 of the game to seal the win.
The Gators will return home for their final two games of the season, first hosting Oberlin at 7 p.m. on Oct. 29 before a senior day battle against Wittenberg on Nov. 1.
