Senior Duo Leads Gator Comeback Over Oberlin

MEADVILLE, Pa. - Senior Stefano Wach scored two second half goals, including his second straight game-winner, while classmate Cameron Olson had a goal and an assist, as the Gators used a strong second half to top Oberlin 4-2 on a rainy night at Frank B. Fuhrer Field.

The Gators (7-8-2, 3-4-1 NCAC) came back from a pair of one-goal deficits, as Wach's header goal in the 66th minute proved to be the difference-maker to give Allegheny its third straight victory, and first win over North Coast Athletic Conference foe Oberlin (5-9-2, 2-5-1) since the 2010 campaign.

Oberlin had the better of the play in the opening minutes, and wasted little time in taking a 1-0 lead.  Nine minutes into the first half, Adam Chazin-Gray chipped a high, arching ball from 30 yards out that floated over the Gator defense and into the net.  The Yeomen continued to apply pressure on the Gator back line, and nearly took a quick two-goal lead just 40 seconds later, but rang a ball off the post from point-blank range on a breakaway.

The hosts evened the score at the 20:07 mark on a beautiful set-up from Hassan.  After a free kick, he gathered the ball at the top of the box and made a hard run toward goal.  At the last second, he sent a hard pass across the goal mouth, which found the foot of classmate Izaak Miller who directed it into the net for his second goal of the year.

The two teams would trade scoring chances as the half wound down, with Pugliese notching his second save of the day in the 33rd minute, before a blast from Olson sailed just wide with eight minutes left.  Oberlin then countered, as Dylan Tencic gave the Yeomen a 2-1 lead on a bending shot from straight on from 20 yards out with 6:30 left in the half.  Allegheny ended the frame with two more shots and a corner kick, but were unable to find the equalizer before the intermission.

The two teams again traded corner kicks and scoring chances in the opening minutes of the second half, before the Gators seized the momentum.  At the 52-minute mark, Pugliese made a save on a header attempt off of a free kick, and on the ensuing run, Olson connected on a rocket to the lower 90 from 30 yards out to tie the game at 2-2.

Fourteen minutes later, the Yeomen were whistled for a foul near midfield.  Olson took the free kick, looping it over the wall and onto the doorstep, where it found the head of a leaping Wach, who directed it into the net to give the Gators their first lead of the night, 3-2, with 23:55 left in regulation.

Allegheny would control play with a series of long possessions over the next several minutes, and had a number of chances to add an insurance tally.  After a hit post, two offsides calls, and an Oberlin save, Wach finally gave his squad a two-goal lead with 1:25 left, when he corralled a rebound off of a hard shot from Hassan and knocked it home to close out the evening's scoring with the Gators' third goal of the half.

Over the final 45 minutes of play, the Gators held a commanding 10-2 advantage in shots, ending with a 17-7 edge for the game. Eight different Gators had at least one shot, led by six from Olson and three apiece from Miller and Daniel Szekely.  Pugliese earned the victory in goal by making three saves in a physical contest in which the teams combined for 25 fouls and three yellow cards.

The Gators will now close out the regular season on Sat. Nov. 1, as they host Wittenberg for a 2:30 p.m. Senior Day match at Frank B. Fuhrer Field.  Prior to kickoff, Allegheny will honor the team's seven-man senior class.
