MEADVILLE, Pa. – A four-goal, first half offensive onslaught pushed the Gators past the Wooster Fighting Scots, 5-1, on Tuesday evening at Frank B. Fuhrer Field.
Gator freshman
Tolossa Hassan assisted on the first two Allegheny tallies, as senior
Cameron Olson and sophomore
Nick Dias found the back of the net early in the contest. Senior
Stefano Wach joined the action in the 26th minute with his second goal of the season, as a pair of own goals by Wooster closed out the evening's scoring for the Blue and Gold. Junior
Jake Pugliese made four stops in net, picking up his fifth win of the season.
Allegheny scored five goals on Tuesday for the first time since the 2011 season, when the Gators upended NCAC opponent Wabash, 5-1, on Oct. 8, 2011. In addition, the Gators scored five goals at home for the first time since Sept. 6, 2011 against Grove City.
With the victory, head coach
Angelo Panzetta became the new program leader in coaching victories, surpassing the previous mark of 132, held by Martin Goldberg, a 1969 graduate who coached the Gators from 1984-97. Panzetta, who earned NCAC Coach of the Year honors in 2002 and 2004, increases his win total to 133 career victories.
Olson scored in the seventh minute, after Hassan took a ball outside of the penalty area towards the outside post, where the senior captain was able to send a scorching shot past the Wooster goalkeeper to give the Gators the early advantage. Hassan created another opportunity for the Gators in the 15th minute, bringing the ball towards the end line and placing a shot on target that danced the goal line before Dias was there to finish the attempt for a 2-0 lead.
Wach's goal came courtesy of a long cross by Olson, who picked up an assist on the goal. Floating through the Wooster defense and goalkeeper, Wach was able to land a ricochet off the post in the back of the net for his second goal of the season. The Gators kept the pressure up despite a Wooster goal in the 33rd minute, as the Fighting Scots suffered an unfortunate deflection off of a distance shot by the Gators, giving Allegheny a 4-1 lead heading into halftime.
Wooster suffered another own goal in the 59th minute, giving Allegheny a 5-1 lead early in the second stanza. The Fighting Scots placed one final push towards the Allegheny net, but sophomore C.J. DeNelle was able to make a save in the 89th minute.
Allegheny will next hit the road to Greencastle, Indiana to battle the Tigers of DePauw University before returning home for a pair of regular season-closing contests, first against Oberlin on Oct. 29 before a Nov. 1 bout against Wittenberg.
