Gators Earn Homecoming Sweep

MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Gators erupted for 38 team kills and a .290 hitting percentage, establishing momentum early to pick up a 3-0 homecoming win over Kenyon on Saturday at the David V. Wise Center.  Allegheny won the first set, 25-8, before clinching the sweep with 25-19 and 25-16 second and third set wins, respectively.

Freshman Hannah Cubarney led the Gators with 11 kills and a .333 clip, tacking on a pair of solo blocks in an impressive Allegheny homecoming debut.  Junior Sarah Swartz added nine kills and a .450 hitting percentage, while junior Bailey Gawley racked up seven kills for the Blue and Gold.  Freshman Justine Kelly led the Gators with a 29-assist performance, while senior Catherine Kasianowicz picked up a team-high 16 digs.  Freshman Terra Schall led Allegheny with three service aces.

In the first set, Allegheny erupted for a set opening, 7-1 lead to force an early timeout by the Ladies.  The Gators continued the pressure, building a 14-4 lead before erupting for an 11-4 run to end the first set.  Schall keyed the run with a four-point run that included three service aces, as Cash closed the set with a three-point run on serve.

Kenyon began to chip away at a 9-3 Allegheny lead in the second set, using a 4-1 lead to bring the deficit to three points.  Kelly vaulted the Gators back to a eight-point advantage with a four-point run, but once again the Ladies proved resilient, using four unanswered points to cut the Gator lead to 17-15.  Cubarney picked up a solo block to send the Gators to a 20-16 lead, as the squad finished the set on a 5-3 run to take the two-set advantage.

The Gators once again erupted to start the third set, taking an 8-2 lead, with freshman Kylee Karczewski playing a key role with a five-point run jump-started by a service ace on a float serve.  The Ladies and Gators exchanged points before Allegheny improved an 18-13 lead with a four-point run to make the lead 22-13, ending the set and the match with a kill from Swartz.

Allegheny will hit the road for a three-game schedule next weekend, which will start on Friday, Oct. 24 against DePauw.  The Gators will then travel to Wittenberg for a tri-match against the Tigers at 1 p.m. followed by a non-conference tilt against Marietta at 3 p.m.
