Tartan Attack Halts Allegheny Win Streak

Sophomore Rachel Vigliotti led the Allegheny offense with 18 points against Carnegie Mellon on Thursday evening.
Box Score MEADVILLE, Pa. – Carnegie Mellon Lisa Murphy scored 36 points while grabbing 21 rebounds as a determined Tartan frontcourt ended Allegheny's three-game winning streak with an 83-72 win over the Gators on Thursday evening at the David V. Wise Center.

Sophomore Rachel Vigliotti spearheaded the Allegheny offense with 18 points, adding three assists and three steals.  Vigliotti, who set a program record last year in free-throw percentage, went 11-for-12 from the charity stripe, including several critical free-throws in the waning moments of the contest to keep the Gators within striking distance.

Four Gators finished in double-digits, as junior Kendall Hoffman continued her strong start to the 2013-14 campaign, notching a double-double with 12 points and a team-high 14 rebounds.  Fellow third year Marina Scarantino drilled three shots from outside the arc, finishing with 13 points while leading the team with five assists.  Sophomore Emma Pellicano, who earned Allegheny Female Athlete of the Week plaudits on Monday, recorded 11 points.

Carnegie Mellon out-scored Allegheny, 50-18, in the paint on Thursday night, led by Murphy's strong offensive performance.  The Gators forced 23 Tartan turnovers, but Carnegie Mellon responded by grabbing 43 defensive boards and out-rebounding Allegheny in total rebounds, 66-45.

The Gators struggled offensively the first, only hitting two of their first 10 field goal attempts.  The Tartans built an 18-8 lead after an early, 4-4 tie, building the lead to as many as 16 with 6:49 remaining in the first.

Back-to-back three-pointers from freshman Aubri Caslin and Vigliotti brought the Gators to within nine, but Carnegie Mellon was able to withstand the late Allegheny push to take a 45-35 lead into halftime.

Allegheny started to claw back into the contest, as a three-pointer by Scarantino closed the deficit to 12 with 16:41 remaining in the second.   However, Carnegie Mellon again kept the Allegheny rally at bay, increasing the lead to 61-43 with 13:16 remaining in the game.

An 8-2 run by the Gators brought the team to within 10, as a three-pointer by Scarantino, a pair of free-throws from Vigliotti and a three-point bucket by Pellicano brought the Gators back to within striking distance.  But the Gators were unable to find an answer for the Carnegie Mellon frontcourt offense, as the Tartans reestablished a double-digit lead, holding an 11-point lead with 2:15 remaining.

Vigliotti kick-started a rally with four points from the charity stripe in 20 seconds, but the late comeback attempt fell short as Carnegie Mellon was able to limit Allegheny's offensive opportunities to run out the clock.

The Gators return home on Saturday, Nov. 23 to take on Grove City at 4 p.m. before closing their November home slate on Tuesday, Nov. 26 against Washington & Jefferson.
