Turnovers Costly as Gators Fall to Yeomen

Raysean Glenn made 10 tackles for the Gators at Oberlin
Box Score OBERLIN, Ohio - The Allegheny offense committed five turnovers, while Oberlin used a strong second half to down the Gators 24-0 in North Coast Athletic Conference play.

Oberlin (2-4, 1-4 NCAC) scored 17 second half points, while limiting the Gators (0-7, 0-6 NCAC) to just 12 first downs and 239 yards of total offense on the day.

The game was a defensive struggle throughout the first half, as both squads seemed to be hampered by rainy, muddy conditions.  On their first possession of the game, the Gators saw a promising drive end on a fumble at the Oberlin 20, but the Yeomen gave the ball right back seven plays later when Ronnie Borne stripped a receiver and pounced on the loose ball inside the Gator five yardline.  Pinned deep inside their own territory, the Gators recorded a pair of first downs but were eventually forced to punt.  Two plays later, Oberlin fumbled for the second time in as many drives, forced by Cody Stolar and recovered by Pat Jameson at the Allegheny 28.   Again, Allegheny was unable to take advantage, and the first quarter ended in a scoreless tie.

The defensive theme continued throughout much of the second quarter, with the first three drives all ending in punts.  With just under eight minutes left in the half, Oberlin embarked on the most productive drive of the half, covering 70 plays in 15 plays and 5:45 to score he half's lone points on a five-yard bootleg scamper by quarterback Lucas Poggiali with 1:58 remaining until the intermission.

On the first play after receiving the opening kickoff of the second half, the Gators committed their second turnover of the day, when a Jon Nigro pass was intercepted on the sideline near midfield.  The drive would stall after the Yeomen advanced inside the Allegheny 15, with kicker Erickson Andrews converting a 32-yard field goal to extend the lead to 10-0 with 11:09 left in the third.

After exchanging four punts over the remainder of the third quarter, Oberlin used its rushing game to extend its lead on its first possession of the fourth.  Taking over on its own 15, the Yeomen covered 75 yards on eight runs, while also taking advantage of a 10-yard Gator personal foul, pushing the lead to 17-0 on Poggiali's second rushing touchdown of the day with 9:50 left in regulation.

On the ensuing kickoff, Johnathon Opet's 41-yard return set the Gators up on their own 45, but the drive appeared to stall after a pair of incomplete passes, sending out the punt unit.  Allegheny then went to its special playbook, with punter Chris Bourne completing a pass over the middle to Brad Burkley, who rumbled 26 yards to the Oberlin 27 for the first down.  An Oberlin pass interference infraction eventually set the Gators up with first down at the Yeomen 15, but the drive would end with an interception in the end zone, Allegheny's fourth turnover of the day.

The Gators' embarked on their final possession of the day with just over a minute remaining, advancing to its own 45 yardline after three straight completions from Nigro to Lucas Morton.  However, the Yeomen would then put an exclamation point on the victory, as Connor Jackson stepped in front of a pass on the sideline in stride, returning his second interception of the game for a 44-yard touchdown with 25 seconds left.

Oberlin out-gained the Gators 313-239 in total offense for the day, with the Yeomen holding a 215-85 advantage in rushing yards.

Nigro completed 19 of 32 passes for 133 yards, with freshman tight end John McFarland making a career-high seven receptions for 40 yards.  Tyler McLaughlin led Allegheny with 35 yards on the ground.

Defensively, Raysean Glenn reached double figures in tackles for a second straight week, finishing with 10 tackles.  Stolar made eight stops and Ryan Sherry seven, with Sherry posting two tackles for loss, including an eight-yard sack.

Moses Richardson ran for a game-high 107 yards on 18 carries for Oberlin, with Poggiali completing 11 of 13 passes for 99 yards and rushing for 33 yards and the two scores.  Kyle Kessler made nine stops to lead the Yeomen.

Allegheny returns to action next Saturday, October 26th, with a 1 p.m. meeting at NCAC foe DePauw University.
