PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Allegheny men's soccer suffered its first loss of the season to a nationally-ranked Carnegie Mellon squad, 2-0, on Saturday in Pittsburgh.
The Gators (5-1-0) put six shots on net but could not find the back of the net, as the Tartans (5-1-0) were able to score early and played solid defense down the stretch.
Junior goalkeeper
John Lichina, who broke the record for career shutouts in Wednesday's 1-0 win over Point Park, finished the game with seven saves, making six saves in a first half that saw the Tartans get several good looks at the Gators net-minder.
Carnegie Mellon kicked off the scoring in the 9th minute off of a rebound, dumping the shot into the netting for an early 1-0 lead. The Tartans took nine shots during the first half and were awarded two corner kicks.
The Gators were sent away from the net for the majority of the second half, managing only two shots during the second frame. The Tartans netted an insurance goal in the 83rd minute on a shot to the far post over Lichina.
Allegheny will return home for a pair of matches this week; first against Baldwin-Wallace on Sept. 18 followed by a Sept. 22 matchup with Mount Union.
