MEADVILLE, Pa. – Denison had three players in double figures, led by Christina Myers with 13 points and 10 rebounds to help the Big Red sweep the season series against Allegheny with a 63-54 victory in North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) women's basketball action on Saturday.
Denison (16-7, 8-6 NCAC) posted its fifth straight win over the Gators (9-14, 6-8 NCAC) to spoil the senior day for the four upperclassmen. Haley Dahlgard was in double digits with 11 points and Serafina Nuzzo added 10 points, four assists and four steals in the win.
Jill Gregory was the leading scorer for Allegheny with 17 points, going 7-for-11 from the free throw line. Brittany Bell collected 11 points and Shannon Culbreath pulled down 11 boards.
It was not until the last five minutes of the first half that the Big Red took more than a four-point lead in the opening stanza. At the 5:11 mark, Kristen Meyer hit a three-pointer followed by a Nuzzo jumper for a 23-17 Denison lead. It took over two minutes for the next field goal to be scored which belonged to Lucy Follansbee to increase the lead to eight points.
Bell hit one of her four three pointers on the afternoon to make it 20-25, but Dahlgard got the final jumper of the half for a seven-point advantage at halftime.
The Big Red quickly turned the lead they built into double digits in the first minute and a half on three free throws by Myers. The Gators scored the next five points on a Lauren Donahoe jumper and Bell trey to cut the deficit to 30-25.
Over the next 4:35 of the game, Allegheny gained momentum and went on a 15-4 to take a two-point lead at 45-43. Bell and Ann Ryan each drained a triple, while Heidi Goeller added five points to give the Gators the edge.
Denison made a run for it in the seven minutes, putting up 13 points and holding Allegheny to just four points until the one-minute mark where Emilie Simone made it 56-50 by hitting the back end of two from the line.
It was Nuzzo who helped the Big Red down the stretch, with a layup and a 4-for-4 showing from the line to keep Denison out in front for the victory.
The Gators travel to Hiram on Wednesday for their second to last regular season game, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
