Gator volleyball, women's soccer teams set for trip to Europe

Squads will play games in Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands

The Allegheny women's soccer and volleyball teams will cross the big pond, hopping a trans-Atlantic flight from New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport to Charles de Gaulle International in Paris, from Aug. 4-13. While in Europe, the Gator teams will take part in four matches each with contests in Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands. A few student-athletes from each team will blog about their experiences, which will be featured at alleghenysports.com throughout the trip.

August 5 – The Gators plan to land in Paris, but will not spend much time in the French capital. Instead, they will travel to Valkenburg in the Netherlands where they will lodge for the duration of the trip.

August 6 – The entire Allegheny group will begin the day by travelling to Cologne, Germany, experiencing a cruise on the Rhine River before the women's soccer team jumps into competition first. The Gators take on SC-07 Bad Neuenahr (Germany) at 7 p.m. local time.

August 7 – After visiting the Netherlands American Cemetery and Memorial – a World War II cemetery in Margraten – the Gator women's soccer team will battle SC 't Zand (Netherlands). Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.

August 8 – The Gator volleyball squad will get its first taste of action when it faces MaVo Dilsen-Stokkem (Belgium) for a 6 p.m. match. On that night, the soccer team plans to attend a professional soccer match in Kerkrade, the Netherlands, between Roda JC and FC Groningen.

August 9 – The volleyball team will play its second match of the trip – this time against VC Beerse (Belgium) – at 1:45 p.m. On the same day, the women's soccer team will take part in five shortened matches at the 2009 Spring Sun Beerse Cup.

August 10 – During the morning, the teams will explore the caves in Valkenburg – some which were used as bomb shelters during World War II. The women's soccer team will finish up its overseas competition with a game against FSC Moenchengladbach (Germany) at 7:30 p.m. The women's volleyball squad will also play at 7:30 p.m. as it takes on TUS Beck (Germany).

August 11 – After both teams spend the day in Aachen, Germany, the volleyball squad will play its final Europe match at 8 p.m. against Volharding Eisden (Belgium).

August 12 – The two teams will enjoy their days separately before reconvening in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, to watch a friendly soccer match between the national teams of England and the Netherlands.

August 13 – The group will return to the States, flying from Brussels, Belgium, to J.F.K.
