MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The No. 12 Wabash Little Giants spoiled the Allegheny football team's Homecoming game, accumulating 533 yards of total offense en route to a 37-3 decision at Frank B. Fuhrer Field on Saturday.
The Gators hung around with the defending North Coast Athletic Conference champion Giants early on before Wabash erupted for 21 second-quarter points.
Allegheny's lone score came on a 40-yard field goal by
Ryan Zipf, with 2:28 left in the first quarter. The boot, which was Zipf's season-long, trimmed a 7-0 Wabash lead to four points.
On Wabash's first three possessions, the Gators forced two turnovers and a missed field goal. Little Giant quarterback Matt Hudson fumbled just 51 seconds into the contest. Allegheny punted on its ensuing drive and Wabash drove the ball to the Gator 15-yard line before kicker Spencer Whitehead missed a 32-yard field goal wide left -- his first miss of the year.
Allegheny punted on its second possession of the day, but regained the ball once again when a Hudson pass was intercepted by
Travis Wilkins at Allegheny's 25 with 6:33 left in the first.
The next Gator possession stalled at their own 31 and led to the game's momentum changer -- an 86-yard punt return by Wes Chamblee, which he brought back for a touchdown.
Allegheny responded with its only scoring drive of the day. Quarterback
T.J. Salopek connected twice with wide receiver
Jake Vite on the drive, including a 39-yard hook-up. The Gators drove as far as the Wabash 23 before Zipf converted his field goal.
Then came Wabash's second-quarter onslaught. With 6:27 left in the half, Hudson capped a nine-play, 71-yard drive, scoring a touchdown run from three yards out. The Little Giant quarterback later completed a 41-yard touchdown pass to Kody LeMond, who made a one-handed catch for the score.
A Salopek interception let to Wabash's fourth touchdown -- a nine-yard pass from Hudson to Tommy Mambourg.
Late in the third quarter, Mambourg set up the next Little Giant score, albeit not in positive manner. He fumbled at the Allegheny 1-yard line.
Andy Schleihauf forced the fumble while
C.J. Bell recovered it. However, one play later, the Gators'
Eric Mastrogiacomo was tackled in the end zone for a Giant safety.
Wabash finished out his scoring in the fourth quarter. Hudson had another touchdown run -- this time from one yard out -- to put the Little Giants ahead 37-3.
Salopek finished 22 of 42 attempts for 238 yards and two interceptions. He was sacked once. Vite had seven catches for 114 yards and
Terry Hartford made six catches for 45 yards.
Defensively, Bell had 8 1/2 tackles.
Kyle Wilson and
Sid Facaros made 7 1/2 stops apiece while Schleihauf had seven tackles.
Travis Wilkins made two sacks, which were the first two given up by Wabash all season. Wilson also had an interception.
For Wabash, Hudson was 25 of 39 for 394 yards. Chamblee made nine catches for 153 yards, LeMond had seven grabs for 124 yards and Jonathan Horn went five caches for 88 yards. Mambourg had 21 rushes for 136 yards.
