Alphonso Howlett

Alphonso "Zo" Howlett enters his first season as an assistant men's basketball coach at Allegheny College in 2023-24.

A coach in the New England area since 2008, Howlett boasts a wealth of experience at the high school and collegiate levels. He most recently worked as an assistant at Castleton University in Castleton, Vermont, from 2019-23. In addition to his on-court duties, Howlett served as the team's academic coordinator and helped place six Spartans on the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Honors Court for the 2022-23 season.

Howlett also spent four years at the College of St. Joseph in Rutland, Vermont, including three seasons as the head men's basketball coach from 2016-19. The Fighting Saints reached the conference championship semifinals in his first two years as head coach, and Howlett mentored one United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) All-American in Charles Isaac Jr., who ranked second in the USCAA in scoring during the 2018-19 season.

A Harlem, New York native, Howlett first relocated to Vermont as a student-athlete. After transferring from Corning Community College, he became a two-year team captain for Green Mountain College. After one season as a student assistant coach with the Eagles, he joined nearby Poultney High School as the varsity boy's basketball coach. Howlett won four league championships and was a two-time Marble Valley League Coach of the Year during his four years at Poultney.

A 2009 graduate of Green Mountain, Howlett recently completed his master's in athletic leadership at Castleton in 2023.
