Ron Rankin begins year two of his second stint with the Allegheny Football program in 2020. Rankin returned to the Allegheny football coaching staff as the assistant head coach, defensive coordinator and the recruiting coordinator in March of 2019. A former assistant coach with the Gators, he possesses more than 30 years of collegiate coaching experience. Â
Rankin was Allegheny's running backs coach during the 1986 and 1987 seasons, when the Gators went 15-5-1 over those two years. He was previously the head coach at then-Division II University of South Dakota in 1997-98 after serving as assistant head coach from 1992-97. Most recently, Rankin was the defensive coordinator at Division II Fairmont State (W. Va.) after spending 15 seasons (beginning in 1999) at Millersville in multiple roles, including defensive coordinator and interim head coach (three times).
Upon leaving Allegheny, Rankin stopped briefly at his alma mater, Edinboro, before beginning his career as a coordinator on the defensive side of the ball at Defiance (Ohio). From there, he returned to Western Pennsylvania as the assistant head coach, offensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator at Gannon (89-92).
Rankin earned his bachelor's degree in secondary education (social studies) from Edinboro. He has been a member of the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) since 1985.
He and is wife, Stephanie, have three children: Marissa, Peter and Rena.
