Last-Second Interception Seals Football's 27-23 Win at Saint Vincent

LATROBE, Pa. -- A Cortlon Campbell (Rocky River, Ohio/Lutheran West) interception on the goal line as time expired sealed Allegheny College's 27-23 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) victory on the road Saturday afternoon at Saint Vincent College.

The clutch defensive stop lifted the Gators (4-0, 2-0 PAC) to their fourth consecutive win to open 2026 and was their first against the Bearcats (1-1, 0-1 PAC) since rejoining the PAC in the fall of 2022. Allegheny also reached 4-0 to start a season for the first time since 1996, a year the Blue & Gold won the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) with an undefeated regular season.

Like last week's contest against Waynesburg University, the Gators fell behind early. However, Allegheny rallied from a 10-point deficit with 20 unanswered points in the second and third quarters. Inside the last five minutes of the second quarter, quarterback Carson Colucci (Brewster, Ohio/Fairless ) atoned for an early interception by chucking two touchdown passes to Terran Mitchell (St. Louis, Mo./Affton) and Micah Smith (Greensboro, N.C./Northern Guilford) to jump ahead 13-10 before the intermission.

Coming out of the halftime break, Colucci and the Gators marched downfield on a 13-play, 83-yard drive to double-up the Bearcats, 20-10. Colucci completed passes to six different receivers on the drive, including a 17-yard catch-and-run by Steven Zerbe (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East). Zerbe broke a tackle and took a short completion in the flat the distance.

After a Malik Jefferson (New Castle, Pa./New Castle) score put the Gators ahead 27-17 in the fourth quarter, Saint Vincent cut the lead down to a single possession with a little over four minutes remaining. After the Bearcat touchdown from Jake Phillips to Chris Downs, linebacker Coltin Colucci (Brewster, Ohio/Fairless) made a crucial play to block the extra point, which took the option of a field goal to force overtime off the table.

The next Bearcat possession with only 1:51 to go started at midfield. Saint Vincent drove to the 10-yard line and had a first-and-goal opportunity with 11 seconds left in regulation. On second down, freshman defensive back AJ Montgomery (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) broke up a near completion on the two-yard line. The third down play was an incompletion in the end zone. With two seconds left on fourth down, Campbell drove in front of receiver Ian Tuffs and picked off Phillips on the goal line to secure the win.

  • Saint Vincent's offense tallied 324 total yards and nearly matched the Gators with 257 passing yards.
