Volleyball Battles at Case Western Reserve Quad

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Allegheny volleyball team concluded a three-game weekend Saturday (Sept. 12) against Case Western Reserve and Mount Union in Cleveland.
 
The Gators fell to both teams in four sets.
 
Case Western Reserve 3, Allegheny 1 (25-9, 19-25, 25-17, 25-22)
 
The Spartans took an early lead in the opening set while limiting the Gator offense, taking the opening set 25-9.
 
After some back-and-forth to start the second set, the Gators put together a 4-0 run to take a 7-4 lead. The Gators continued to develop their lead throughout the set, reaching as much as seven as they took it 25-19.
 
Early in the second set, the Gators went on a big 7-0 run to take an 11-4 lead. The Spartans came back, tying the set at 12 before taking the lead. That run gave Case Western Reserve the momentum for the rest of the set as they won it 25-17.
 
The teams battled back-and-forth throughout the fourth set. Late in the set, the Gators trailed by one, 23-22, but the Spartans won the ensuing two points to take the match in four.
 
Inside the Box
  • Carly Beers (Warren, Pa./Warren) led the team with 12 kills.
  • Marissa Rish (Burton, Ohio/Berkshire) was just shy of a triple-double, finishing with 15 digs, 15 assists and nine kills. She also had three aces.
  • Skyler Fatola (Queen Creek, Ariz./Eastmark) added eight kills and three blocks.
  • Joanna Miller (Pittsburgh, Pa./Gateway) had 11 assists and eight digs.
  • Duru Akbas (Ankara, Turkey/Layton Christian Academy (Utah)) contributed 13 digs.
Mount Union 3, Allegheny 1 (25-23, 24-26, 25-14, 25-20)
 
The Raiders jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the first set. The Gators chipped away at the lead, cutting it to two points, 20-18. A few moments later, the lead was down to one, 23-22, but Mount Union won the final two points to take the opening set, 25-23.
 
The Gators utilized a 4-0 run in the second set to take a 13-12 lead. Trailing 24-22, the Raiders won two points to tie it up. A kill by Rish, followed by a Mount Union attack error, gave the Gators the set 26-24.
 
In the third set, the two sides were knotted at 12 before the Raiders went on a 6-0 run. That momentum guided them the rest of the way as they won the set 25- 14.
 
The Gators held a 12-10 lead in set four, but the Raiders went on a 6-1 run to take control. Allegheny mounted a comeback, tying it back up at 19. However, Mount Union closed the set on a 6-1 run to win the match.
 
Inside the Box
  • Once again, RIsh almost had a triple-double, tallying 14 kills, 18 assists and seven digs.
  • Reilly Mendez (Los Gatos, Calif./Los Gatos) finished in double digits with 10 kills, while Fatola had nine.
  • Carlee Pepperman (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte Area) registered eight digs, seven kills and three aces.
  • Miller had 23 assists and five digs.
  • Akbas had a 21-dig game. 
News and Notes
  • Allegheny is now 22-18 all-time against Case Western Reserve and 10-18 against Mount Union.

The Gators open up the home portion of their schedule with their annual home invitational starting Friday (Sept. 18) against Fredonia and Adrian.
