Volleyball Opens Season at Wooster

WOOSTER, Ohio – The Allegheny volleyball team opened their season on the road at Wooster Tuesday (Sept. 1), falling to the hosts in four sets.
 
The Fighting Scots won the sets 26-24, 21-25, 25-20, 25-22.
 
The Gators used a 6-0 run to take a 14-8 lead in the opening set. However, Wooster fought back to tie the set at 16. The teams continued to trade points back-and-forth as they were tied at 24 late in the set, but Wooster won the final two points to take it 26-24.
 
The Fighting Scots jumped out to an early lead in the second set. The Gators fought back, piecing together a 6-0 run to take a 15-13 lead. Allegheny was able to maintain that lead the rest of the way, tying the match with a 25-21 set two win.
 
Wooster controlled the third set after building an early advantage to move ahead, 2-1.
 
The teams were even through most of the fourth set before the Fighting Scots went on a 5-0 run to jump ahead. The Gators pulled within two points, 22-20, late in the set, but were unable to overcome the deficit as they dropped the fourth set 25-22.
 
Inside the Box
  • Skyler Fatola (Queen Creek, Ariz. / Eastmark) led the team with 13 kills.
  • Marissa Rish (Burton, Ohio / Berkshire) had 12 kills, 16 assists and 15 digs in her collegiate debut.
  • Jillian Smetana (Chardon, Ohio / Berkshire) had 11 kills in her first match.
  • Carlee Pepperman (Bellefonte, Pa. / Bellefonte Area) finished with 11 digs and eight kills.
  • Joanna Miller (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Gateway) had 23 assists and 11 digs.
  • Duru Akbas (Ankara, Turkey / Layton Christian Academy (Utah)) led the team with 21 digs.
News and Notes
  • Allegheny is now 30-25 all-time against Wooster.
  • Ande Northrup (Ellicottville, N.Y. / Ellicottville Central), RIsh and Smetana made their Allegheny debuts.
