Baseball Blasts 40 Hits, Scores 27 Runs in Sweep at Thiel

GREENVILLE, Pa. -- The Allegheny College baseball team broke out the bats and slugged its way to a doubleheader sweep of Thiel College in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) action on Wednesday.

The Gators (16-10, 8-2 PAC) logged a combined 40 hits and scored 27 runs en route to a pair of victories over the Tomcats (5-19, 2-8 PAC) by scores of 14-4 and 13-5. A dozen different batters picked up at least one hit, while 10 Gators earned multiple hits on a sunny afternoon at Tomcat Park.

Allegheny 14, Thiel 4 (7 innings)
Allegheny's biggest innings came in the third and seventh, as the Gators plated six in the top of the third and four in the seventh.

In the third, the first eight batters each reached base, highlighted by a series of seven consecutive hits. Noah Philson (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) laced a base knock up the middle that plated two and broke an early 1-1 tie. Connor Kunkle (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area), Michael Alspaugh (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township), Zach Miner (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township), Liam Irving (Olney, Md./Sherwood), and Ty Eberhardt (Pittsburgh, Pa./Hopewell) followed with six singles in a row. In his second at-bat of the inning, Tyler Skaggs (Champion Heights, Ohio/Champion) singled and drove in two more runs, extending the Allegheny advantage to 7-1.

The seventh inning was highlighted by a two-run homer off the bat of Ryan Cochran (Pittsburgh, Pa./Deer Lakes), one of two homers and 11 extra-base hits smacked by the Gators on the day.

Allegheny 13, Thiel 5
The Blue and Gold continued to score runs in bunches. Every Gator in the lineup between the second and eighth spots finished with a hit, including seven multi-hit performances that fueled another offensive clinic.

Philson and Kunkle earned RBIs on back-to-back one-out hits in the top of the first, as the Gators grabbed an early 2-0 lead. Allegheny then put up a four-spot in the fourth inning, all with two outs, including a three-run double from Ivan Schuster (Chino Valley, Ariz./Prescott).

Cochran launched another home run, a solo shot, to widen the gap to 8-1. Up 10-5 in the ninth, Jake Fix (Westlake, Ohio/Saint Ignatius) clubbed an RBI double, followed immediately by a two-run single from Schuster to reach the final total of 13.
