DAVENPORT, Fla. -- The Allegheny College baseball team held on to defeat Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, 9-6, on Wednesday at Northeast Regional Park in Davenport, Florida.
The Gators (5-4) concluded their spring break trip with a victory while handing the Fightin' Engineers (5-1) their first loss of the season. Second-year lefty
Parker McRay (Mechanicsville, Va./Altee) twirled a gem on the mound for Allegheny with 7.0 scoreless innings with six strikeouts.
While McRay carved through the Rose-Hulman lineup, the Gators built a 7-0 lead throughout the first six innings. Allegheny plated a run in four consecutive innings after stranding runners on the bases in the first two frames.
Tommaso Floro (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley) lifted a sac fly to right for the first run of the game in the third, followed by an RBI base hit from
Michael Alspaugh (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township). In the fourth and fifth,
Nick Banez (Edmonds, Wash./Meadowdale) added RBI doubles, while the sixth was highlighted by run-scoring hits from
Liam Irving (Olney, Md. Sherwood) and Alspaugh.
Rose-Hulman didn't go down without a fight, however. They attacked the Allegheny bullpen for four runs in the bottom of the eighth and two more in the ninth. Clinging to a 7-4 lead with two on in the eighth, second-year righty
Ashton Reidy (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Brother Rice) took over on the mound and quickly induced an inning-ending 5-4-3 double play. But Allegheny needed its two insurance runs in the top of the ninth, as TJ Pipkins did his best to spark a comeback with a two-run homer for the Engineers in the bottom of the inning. Reidy was able to shake off the homer and finished his save by striking out two of the next three batters.
