MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny baseball team swept a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader against Chatham in Meadville Sunday (March 29).
The Gators won game one 7-0 and game two 5-4.
Chatham entered the contest receiving votes in the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Top-25 Poll.
Game One - Allegheny 7, Chatham 0
Liam Irving (Olney, Md./Sherwood) hit a lead-off single in the bottom of the first and advanced to second on a wild pitch.
Ryan Cochran (Pittsburgh, Pa./Deer Lakes) doubled to the left center gap, bringing Irving in for the game's first run.
Noah Philson (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) followed up with a RBI single to left field, making the score 2-0.
In the fifth,
Zach Miner (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) hit an infield single before Cochran beat out the throw to first for a bunt single.
Jake Fix (Westlake, Ohio/Saint Ignatius) would bring Miner in on an RBI single to right field. Cochran then came home on a wild pitch to make it 4-0. Fix also scored off an error later in the inning as their lead reached 5-0.
The Gators loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh.
Nick Banez (Edmonds, Wash./Meadowdale) drew a walk which scored
Michael Alspaugh (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township). An infield single by
Connor Kunkle (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) scored Fix.
The Cougars threatened in the eighth with the bases loaded and just one out, but the Gators turned a 4-6-3 double play to get out of the inning unscathed.
Ben Shields (Charleroi, Pa./Charleroi Area) pitched seven innings of scoreless baseball, combining with
Ryan Finamore (Pittsburgh, Pa./Quaker Valley) and
Johnny Hughes (Cheswick, Pa./Springdale) for the shutout win.
Inside the Box
- Shields pitched seven shutout innings, allowing just six hits and no runs.
- Cochran had two hits with a double while driving a run in.
- Philson also had two runs and a RBI.
- Alspaugh had the third multi-hit game for the Gators.
- Fix and Kunkle both had RBI hits.
Game Two - Allegheny 5, Chatham 4
The Cougars scored first in game two, plating a run in the top of the third. The Gators answered with a run in the bottom of the frame when Fix hit a sacrifice fly to score
Liam Irving (Olney, Md./Sherwood).
After Chatham regained the lead in the fourth by scoring a run, the Gators took it back with two runs in the bottom of the frame. Alspaugh drew a walk to start the frame and Kunkle singled up the middle. Alspaugh moved to third on the single and scored on a wild pitch.
Ty Eberhardt (Pittsburgh, Pa./Hopewell) then hit a sacrifice fly to bring Kunkle in and tie the game.
The Gator lead would be short lived as the Cougars tied the game back up in the fifth.
In the seventh, Miner and Coahran had back-to-back singles to start the frame. Philson then loaded the bases as he reached first on a well-placed bunt. The Cougars recorded two outs, but Kunkle delivered a two RBI double to right field, scoring Miner and Cochran as the Gators regained the lead, 5-3.
Chatham loaded the bases with one out in the eighth. The Cougars punched one run across on a groundout, but
Ashton Reidy (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Brother Rice) got the Gators out of the inning with a strikeout looking.
Alspaugh closed out the game on the mound for Gators in the ninth without allowing a baserunner as the Gators completed the doubleheader sweep.
Inside the Box
- Kunkle had a pair of hits, driving in the final two runs for the Gators on a double.
- Cochran and Philson both had two hit games.
- Fix and Eberhardt drove in runs.
- Reidy earned the win, pitching two innings of relief, striking out three.
- Alspaugh earned the save with a 1-2-3 ninth inning. He also had a hit in the game.
- Parker McRay (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) got the start, going 4.1 innings and allowing three runs.
- Harrison Ashley (Jupiter, Fla./The Benjamin School) finished the fifth inning without allowing a hit.
- Matt Gunning (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) pitched a 1-2-3 inning.
