Gators Sweep Tuesday Twin Bill vs. Hiram

MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Allegheny College baseball team improved to 4-0 to start Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play by sweeping Tuesday's doubleheader against Hiram College by scores of 4-3 and 9-3.

Allegheny 4, Hiram 3 (11 innings)
For a second consecutive series, Allegheny (12-6, 4-0 PAC) needed a walk-off to preserve its undefeated record at Robert M. Garbark '32 Field. The Gators won Tuesday's opener in the 11th inning thanks to a bases-loaded hit from Noah Philson (Greenville, Pa./Greenville). Hiram (4-11, 1-3 PAC) brought the infield in with hopes of getting an out at home, but Philson put just enough on the ball to get it past the second baseman, allowing Ty Eberhardt (Pittsburgh, Pa./Hopewell) to score the winning run.

Thanks to a strong start from pitcher Zach Miner (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township), it looked as though the Gators might win the early contest in regulation. Miner fired six shutout innings and carried a no-hitter into the seventh, all while clinging to a 2-0 lead. However, the Terriers stunned the home dugout by erasing the shutout in the seventh and jumping ahead in the eighth on a two-run, pinch-hit homer off the bat of Andrew Fawver.

The Blue and Gold drove home the tying run in the bottom of the eighth to force extra innings, knotted at 3-all. Reliever Michael Alspaugh (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) retired all six Hiram batters he faced in the 10th and 11th innings, but Philson delivered the heroic walk-off winner.

Allegheny 9, Hiram 3
Unlike the first matchup, the Gators distanced themselves from the Terriers early and maintained a comfortable lead throughout. Sophomore Ryan Cochran (Pittsburgh, Pa./Deer Lakes) slugged a solo home run in the first, before Allegheny put up a five-spot in the third to pull ahead 6-0. The Gators plated three more in the bottom of the seventh, including another pair of RBIs on a two-out double from Cochran.

Freshman Caden Williams (Mars, Pa./North Catholic) wasn't as spotless as Miner on the mound, but the southpaw worked 5.0 strong innings to clinch his first collegiate victory. He started a key 1-4-3 double play in the second, before stranding the bases loaded in the third. The only blemish on Williams' box score was a solo home run from Logan Gallentine in the fifth. After Hiram scratched across two runs in the seventh, Ashton Reidy (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Brother Rice) took over on the bump and induced two more critical double plays to silence any chance of a Hiram comeback.
