Softball Drops Pair of Games in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Allegheny softball team played a pair of games in Florida as part of the THE Spring Games Monday (March 2).
 
The Gators fell to John Jay, 3-2, in game one and to Alvernia, 10-5, in game two.
 
Game One - John Jay 3, Allegheny 2
 
In the bottom of the second, Lauren Folino (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) and Julia Perillo (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) hit back-to-back one out singles. Starting pitcher Madison Hulse (San Diego, Calif./Rancho Bernardo) drew a walk to load the bases. Jayla Jones (Pittsburgh, Pa./Avonworth) delivered a RBI single up the middle, bringing Folino home. Samantha Phillips (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) then drove Hulse in as the Gators took a 2-0 lead.
 
The Bloodhounds made up a run in the fourth, cutting the Allegheny lead in half.
 
John Jay threatened again in the top of the sixth, loading the bases with one out. However, a strikeout by Hulse and a line out to Perillo at second got the Gators out of the inning unscathed.
 
In the seventh, the Bloodhounds took the lead, plating two runs to go ahead 3-2.
 
In the bottom of the frame, Jones produced her third single of the game with two outs. However, the Gators were unable to bridge the gap as they fell 3-2.
 
Inside the Box
  • Jones led the team with three hits while driving in a run.
  • Perillo had a multi-hit game as well.
  • Phillips drove in a run on a single while Folino also had a hit.
  • Hulse pitched all seven innings, allowing no earned runs while scattering seven hits and striking out four. 
Game Two - Alvernia 10, Allegheny 5
 
The Golden Wolves got out to an early lead after scoring four runs in the second.
 
Riley Lorah (Waterford, Pa./General McLane) and Phillips produced hits in the top of the third. Abby Robinson (Mars, Pa./Mars Area) loaded the bases after reaching on an error. Perillo followed up with a two RBI single down the third base line, scoring a pinch running Madalyn Myers (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) and Phillips. Jones then hit an infield single to score Robinson before Perillo came across the plate on a wild pitch.
 
Alvernia regained the lead with three runs in the bottom of the frame. They tacked on one more run in the fourth to make it 8-4.
 
In the sixth, Alaina Sharp (Lewistown, Pa./Mifflin County) led off with an infield single. Later in the inning, Avery Magee (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton) had a pinch hit single, bringing Sharp in.
 
However, the Golden Wolves added two more runs in the sixth as they closed out the game without allowing another Gator across the plate. 
 
Inside the Box
  • Jones added two more hits with a run driven in.
  • Perillo drove in two runs on one hit.
  • Magee had a pinch-hit RBI single.
  • Phillips, Robinson, Sharp, Lorah all had hits.
News and Notes
  • Today's games were the Gators first against John Jay and Alvernia.
  • Folino, Lorah and Robinson recorded their first collegiate hit.
