GRANVILLE, Ohio -- Allegheny College field hockey suffered a 5-0 loss to first-place Denison University in Sunday's North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) match in Granville, Ohio.
The Gators (6-8, 4-4 NCAC) couldn't halt Denison's (11-2, 7-0 NCAC) win streak, which moved to 11 consecutive games with its win on Sunday. The Big Red presented a tough challenge to finish a weekend with back-to-back games; they not only boast the highest-scoring offense in the conference, but they also own the league's best defense.
Allegheny held Denison off the scoreboard for most of the first quarter, but the Big Red finally broke through for the game's first goal with less than a minute to go. However, the Gators had a few chances to strike first in the opening quarter. They earned the first penalty corner of the day, which led to a shot by
Bryce Watford (Parkville, Md./Eastern Technical). Nearly 11 minutes into the quarter,
Anna Merlack (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) had an attempt blocked. It was immediately followed up by
Caroline Smith (Colorado Springs, Colo./Liberty), but the ball was kicked away before it could find the bottom right corner of the cage.
