Football Defeated by Geneva at Home, 28-16

MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Allegheny College football team couldn't match the pace of Geneva  College's aerial attack in a 28-16 loss to the Golden Tornadoes on Saturday afternoon at Frank B. Fuhrer Field.

Known for previously relying on a run-heavy, triple-option offense over the past decade, Geneva (2-2, 2-0 PAC) was successful with its newfound air raid scheme. Just a week after throwing for nearly 500 yards in a win over Saint Vincent College, quarterback Caleb Romano led the Golden Tornadoes to their second consecutive Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) win with 355 yards and all four Geneva touchdowns.

Allegheny (1-3, 1-1 PAC) turned to two different options at quarterback. Although both Carson Colucci (Brewster, Ohio/Fairless) and Nick Barker (Cleveland, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) showed flashes of success, it wasn't enough to match the visitors from start to finish. Colucci guided the Gators 84 yards on the team's first possession, capped off by a 33-yard catch-and-run by Terran Mitchell (St. Louis, Mo./Affton) that put Allegheny ahead 7-0 in the early going. However, the Gators were forced to punt on each of their next five drives and were stuffed on a fourth-and-one before halftime.

Meanwhile, Geneva scored 28 unanswered points between the first and third quarters and rolled out to a 28-7 lead. Looking for a spark, Barker took control of the Allegheny offense in the second half. On his second drive, Barker connected with Mitchell, who made an incredible diving grab in the end zone to turn a fourth down into Allegheny's second score of the afternoon.

Momentum continued to swing in favor of the Gators when a botched long snap on a fourth and 18 by the Geneva punt unit allowed Allegheny to gain possession on Geneva's 16-yard line. Despite the excellent field position, the ensuing drive ended with a fourth-down sack. Special teams continued to haunt the Golden Tornadoes, as punter Evan Baker allowed another snap to slip through his fingers and out the back of the end zone for a safety, cutting the deficit to 12 points with 13:42 remaining.

Down by two possessions, Allegheny was able to advance the ball into Geneva territory on its last three drives, but failed to produce any points. First, Barker was stopped short on a fourth-down rush at the five-yard line. Inside the final two-and-a-half minutes, the first-year quarterback – taking the first meaningful snaps of his collegiate career – threw two interceptions while desperately looking for a comeback opportunity.
