MEADVILLE, Pa. – Allegheny volleyball senior libero
Jacy Diaz (Barranquitas, Puerto Rico/Gallatin (Tenn.)) broke the program record for career digs as the Gators dropped a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) match to Hiram Friday (Sept. 19) in Meadville.
Diaz finished the contest with 18 digs, recording the record breaking 2,219th dig in the third set. The record was previously held by Joy Kosiewicz, set in 1994.
The Terriers jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the opening set. The Gators were unable to overcome the early deficit as they dropped the set 25-14.
The second set had a similar start as the first as Hiram gained an 11-5 lead. Allegheny continued to battle throughout the set, bringing the score to 18-17 a trio of aces by
Duru Akbas (Ankara, Turkey/Layton Christian Academy (Utah)). After a timeout, the Gators tied the score at 18. The teams traded the lead back-and-forth, but the Terriers captured the set 25-23.
Once again, the Terriers took an 11-7 lead in the third set. The Gators slowly chipped away at the lead, coming within two points late in the set. However, the Terriers ultimately won the set 25-22 as the Gators fell in conference action.
Inside the Box
- Carlee Pepperman (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte Area) led the team with 12 kills, going alongside 14 digs.
- Sydney Kirk (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton LaSalle Catholic) had five kills while Carly Beers (Warren, Pa./Warren) had four.
- Izzy Gray (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) had 20 assists and eight digs.
- Diaz led the backline with 18 digs.
- Akbas had 10 digs and three aces.
News and Notes
- Diaz broke the program record for career digs, which was previously 2,218, held by Joy Kosiewicz. She currently has 2,022 digs in her career. Diaz is also among the top of NCAA in career digs among active players.
- Allegheny is now 12-26 all-time against Hiram.
