MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Allegheny College women's tennis team started off the new year in style with a strong showing at the annual Allegheny Invitational, hosted by the Gators at the Robertson Athletic Complex on Saturday and Sunday.
Over the course of two days, the Gators posted a 23-9 singles record with an 11-2 record in doubles competition. The invitational not only featured opponents from Baldwin Wallace University and Oberlin College, but also included athletes from Division I Mercyhurst University and Division II Walsh University.Â
Four Gators finished undefeated in singles action.
Jillian Clark (Butler, Pa./Butler),
Adriana Navarro (Distrito Central, Honduras/DelCampo School), and first-years
Gabrielle Bassette (Miami, Fla./Miami Country Day School) and
Madison McDunn (Warren, Pa./Warren Area) each posted 3-0 records. One of Bassette's wins came against D-II Walsh, as she battled for a 7-6 (5), 6-4 win over Eliza Verstappen.
Allegheny also had two doubles teams go 3-0 over the weekend. Navarro partnered with
Maria Lounder (Pittsburgh, Pa./Moon Area) and won 18 of 19 games played with two shutout wins.
Emiliia Grydnieva (Kyiv, Ukraine/Optima) and first-year
Giada Palmieri (Berlin, Germany/Paulsen Gymnasium) beat two duos from Oberlin and secured a 7-5 triumph over the tandem of Colleen Andersen and Olivia Koutouras from BWU.
