Devries Homers Twice as Gators Sweep Barons

MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny softball team collected a home Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) sweep of Franciscan Wednesday (April 9).

The Gators captured game one 9-2 before taking game two 10-2.

Game One - Allegheny 9, Franciscan 2

In the bottom of the second, Alaina Sharp (Lewistown, Pa./Mifflin County) hit a two-out double to the left center fence. After a wild pitch, Julia Perillo (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) drove her in on a single through the right side. A dropped fly ball then allowed Perillo to come all the way around from first to make it 2-0 after two innings.

In the bottom of the third, Allegheny extended their lead to 3-0 as Olivia Devries (Kent, Ohio/Field) hit a solo home run over the left field fence. The home run was her fifth of the year.

The Barons made up a pair of runs in the top of the third with a two-run home run.

Singles by Samantha Phillips (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) and Devries put two runners on in the fifth. Sofia Genareo (Lakewood, N.Y./Southwestern Central) singled down the third base line, bringing Phillps in to make it 4-2.

Audrey Blarr (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence) and Sharp started the sixth with back-to-back singles. Perillo cleared the bases with a double to the right center gap, increasing the lead to 6-2. Halle Book (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Catholic) then drove Perillo in with her own double. Later in the inning with a runner on, Devries went deep once again with a two run shot, making it 9-2.

Aleya Belardinelli (Melbourne, Fla./West Shore) struck out the side in the seventh to cap off the win.

Genareo tripled down the right field line to start the bottom of the frame. Blarr would drive her home on a groundout to make it 4-2.

The Gators added four runs in the fourth. Starting pitcher Samantha Dzierba (Colden, N.Y./Orchard Park) and Book had back-to-back hits. Catherine Burkett (Harborcreek, Pa./Harbor Creek) pinch ran for Dzierba and scored on a Phillips single. An infield single by Belardinelli brought Book home before Genareo singled up the middle, scoring Phillips. The final run of the inning came across the plate on a Blarr sacrifice fly as the Gator lead stretched to 8-2.
