WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Allegheny softball team continued play at The Spring Games in Florida Thursday (March 6), dropping both ends of a doubleheader.
The Gators fell 4-3 against Bethany Lutheran in game one and to ninth-ranked Trine 8-1 in game two.
Game One - Bethany Lutheran 4, Allegheny 3
Aleya Belardinelli (Melbourne, Fla./West Shore) reached on a throwing error with one out in the top of the first before
Olivia Devries (Kent, Ohio/Field) singled through the left side. A liner over the third baseman by
Sofia Genareo (Lakewood, N.Y./Southwestern Central) loaded the bases. After a 10 pitch at-bat with two outs,
Avery Magee (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton) earned a walk as the Gators struck first.
Rachel Seneca (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) followed up with a single to left center that brought both Devries and Genareo around, making it 3-0.
The Vikings threatened in the bottom of the inning as they had runners at second and third with no outs. However, Belardinelli navigated the Gators out of the situation without letting a runner cross the plate.
Bethany Lutheran would tie it up in the third, scoring three runs on four hits in the inning.
After a scoreless fourth inning, the Vikings gained the lead following a triple and sacrifice fly in the fifth.
In the sixth, a two-out single by Magee followed by a double from Seneca put runners on second and third, but the Vikings got out of the situation to keep their one run lead.
The lead remained the same heading into the seventh.
Samantha Phillips (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) singled with one out and moved up on a Belardinelli sacrifice bunt. However, the runner was left on base as the Gators fell in a close 4-3 contest.
Inside the Box
- Seneca had two hits, including a double, while driving in a pair of runs.
- Magee had a single and a RBI.
- Phillips, Devries and Genareo also had hits.
- Belardinelli struck out four batters.
Game Two - #9 Trine 8, Allegheny 1
After a scoreless three innings where
Samantha Dzierba (Colden, N.Y./Orchard Park) struck out five batters, the ninth-ranked Thunder put two on the board in the top of the fourth.
The Gators quickly made up one of those runs as Devries crushed a ball over the left field fence to leadoff the bottom of the frame. It marked her second home run of the season.
Trine added to their lead in the fifth off of a two run home run. They then added three runs on three hits and an error in the sixth to make it 7-1.
The Thunder tacked on one more run in the seventh to seal the win.
Inside the Box
- Dzierba ended the game with nine strikeouts.
- Devries went three-for-three with a solo home run.
- Phillips also produced three hits.
- Audrey Blarr (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence) delivered a pair of hits.

- Today marked Allegheny's first contests against both Bethany Lutheran and Trine.
