Baseball Sweeps Waynesburg to Open PAC Play

WAYNESBURG, Pa. – The Allegheny baseball team began their 2025 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) schedule with a sweep of Waynesburg Saturday (March 22) on the road.
 
The Gators won game one 15-0 and game two 11-7.
 
Game One - Allegheny 15, Waynesburg 0 (7 innings)
 
The Gators put up three runs on three hits in the second. Grant Dowden (Ligonier, Pa./Ligonier Valley) drove in Garrett Lienhard (Jim Thorpe, Pa./Jim Thorpe) for the first run on a RBI single to right field. Then a double steal by Dowden and Nick Banez (Edmonds, Wash./Meadowdale) brought Banez across the plate. Tommy Landsnes (Richmond, Va./Brunswick Academy) brought the final run home on a single to center, making it 3-0.
 
Allegheny tacked on another run in the fourth. Tyson Bryant-Dawson (Oakland, Calif./Manvel (Texas)) led-off the inning with a bunt single and eventually came around on a Lienhard RBI groundout.
 
The Gators had another big inning in the sixth, scoring five runs. A Dowden double scored Lienhard. Landsnes followed up with a two RBI single, playing Dowden and Banez. A couple batters later, Bryant-Dawson doubled to bring Matt Jennings (Birmingham, Mich./Brother Rice) in. Bryant-Dawson scored the final run of the inning on a double steal attempt as the lead reached 9-0.
 
The lead grew to 15-0 after a six run seventh. Drew Evans (Erie, Colo./Erie) drove in two on a RBI single up the middle. Jennings, Landsnes and Dowden also had a RBI each in the frame.
 
After Mark Schweickert (Richmond, Va./John Randolph Tucker) threw six innings of shutout ball, Brett McSparran (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) finished the game as the Gators picked up the game one win.
 
Inside the Box
  • Schweickert earned the win, allowing just two hits in six innings while striking out four.
  • Landsnes drove in four runs on two hits.
  • Dowden brought two runs in and doubled.
  • Evans had a career-high two runs batted in.
  • Bryant-Dawson had a pair of doubles.
  • William Wolff (Naples, Fla./Gulf Coast) had a multi-hit game, including a double.
  • Eight different Gators recorded hits. 
Game Two - Allegheny 11, Waynesburg 7
 
The Gators got to work right away with a run in the first. After Jennings singled, Wolff would bring him in on a RBI single.
 
The score remained 1-0 until the sixth. With two runners on, Wolff cranked a home run over the left field fence, increasing the lead to 4-0. The home run was his second of the season and fifth of his career. Later in the inning, a Banez double brought Alejandro Samayoa (Katonah, N.Y./John Jay Cross River) home to make it 5-0.
 
In the seventh, the Gators added six runs on five hits. Lienhard drove in two of the runs while Wolff, Tyler Skaggs (Champion Heights, Ohio/Champion) and Jennings also hit runners home.
 
The Yellowjackets finally cracked the scoreboard in the seventh, scoring three runs.
 
In the bottom of the ninth, Waynesburg added four more runs, but it was not enough as the Gators started conference play with a sweep.
 
Inside the Box
  • Jennings went four-for-five with a RBI.
  • Wolff had three hits, including a three-run home run, driving in five runs.
  • Lienhard drove in two with two hits.
  • Samayoa had a pair of doubles.
  • Walker Cunningham (Cambridge Springs, Pa./Cambridge Springs) earned the win on the mound. In 7.0 innings of work, he gave up four hits and an earned run while striking out eight batters.
News and Notes
  • Allegheny is now 13--9 all-time against Waynesburg.
