BETHANY, W. Va. – The Allegheny women's basketball team concluded their 2024-25 regular season on the road at Bethany Saturday (Feb. 22), picking up the Presidents Athletic Conference (PAC) road win 67-58.
The win secures a second-seed for the Gators in the upcoming PAC Championship Tournament, and will grant them a first round bye.
After going back-and-forth to begin, the Gators went on an 8-0 run to take a 13-7 lead. The lead dipped to just two points, 15-13, late in the frame. A basket by
Ava Kobus (Pittsburgh, Pa./Norwin) was followed up by a late three by
Jess Bickart (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) which gave Allegheny a 20-13 lead heading into the second.
The lead grew to nine early in the second quarter, but the Bison put together a 7-0 run to pull within two points. Bethany continued to play well in the frame as they gained the lead with four minutes remaining, Their lead grew to four points before an Allegheny basket made it 32-30 at the halftime break.
Similar to the opening of the first half, the second half featured back-and-forth action before Bethany gained a 45-39 lead. The Gators battled back and tied the game at 47 with under a minute left in the quarter. A fast break layup by
Emily Lauer (Knox, Pa./Keystone), followed by a pair of free throws by the senior put Allegheny in front 51-47 with 10 minutes to play.
A fast start to the fourth saw the Gators gain a nine point lead, 56-47, their largest of the game. Allegheny used that momentum to maintain their lead. Down the stretch, the Gators were tested at the free throw line, but passed as they wrapped up their regular season with the road victory.
Inside the Box
- Lauer led the team with 15 points.
- Sofia Genareo (Lakewood, N.Y./Southwestern Central) and Sarah Santicola (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) each finished with 12 points, nine rebounds and two assists.
- Bella Antonacci (Indiana, Pa./Indiana Area) also had 12 points to go alongside eight assists and six rebounds.
- Bickart was the fifth Gator in double figures, finishing with 10 points and nine rebounds.
- Kobus also pulled down nine rebounds with six points.
- For the game, Allegheny shot 41.7% from the field (25-60) with a 45-32 edge in rebounds.
News and Notes
- The Gators finished the regular season with a 18-7 overall record and a 17-3 mark in PAC play. This marks the most conference wins in program history, with the previous best being 13, achieved three times previously.
- Allegheny is 11-4 all-time against Bethany.
