Gators’ Comeback Falls Short Against Division II Edinboro

MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny women's basketball team's second half comeback bid fell short against Division II Edinboro Friday (Dec. 12) as the Gators dropped the home contest 68-59.

The Fighting Scots jumped out to a 8-3 lead but a driving lay-up by Eyra Co (Manila, Philippines/Pike Christian Academy (Ohio)) cut the deficit to two midway through the first quarter. Over the final five minutes of the frame, Edinboro outpaced Allegheny 16-9 as they led 24-14 after 10 minutes.

The teams went back-and-forth throughout the second quarter. The Fighting Scots maintained their advantage from the first quarter as they took a 35-24 lead into the halftime break.

Co led the Gators in the first half with nine points while Sarah Santicola (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) added five points and seven rebounds.

Edinboro's lead grew to 17 early in the third quarter, but the Gators brought it down to 47-39 following back-to-back threes by Jess Bickart (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) with two-and-a-half remaining. Following an Edinboro timeout, Isabella Antonacci (Indiana, Pa./Indiana Area) hit a three as the deficit fell to five points before they entered the fourth down 49-43.

The fourth quarter started with a 4-0 Edinboro run before the Gators strung together their own run of 5-2. Following the media timeout, a lay-up by Ava Kobus (Pittsburgh, Pa./Norwin) made it a six point game once more, 58-52. However, the Gators were unable to complete the comeback as they fell 68-59.
