MEADVILLE, Pa. -- In a battle of the top two teams in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), the Allegheny College women's tennis team defeated Grove City College, 5-2, on Wednesday evening at the Robertson Athletic Complex.
Both teams entered the midweek showdown with matching 5-0 conference records, but the Gators (6-0, 6-0 PAC) snapped Grove City's (6-2, 5-1 PAC) win streak. Although the Wolverines became the first team to take points from the Gators this fall, Allegheny extended its regular-season conference unbeaten streak to 30 consecutive matches.
After earning the doubles point, the Gators won the top four singles matches, including a pair of three-set contests. At No. 2 singles,
Giada Palmieri (Berlin, Germany/Paulsen Gymnasium) recovered from a 6-3 loss in the opening set by winning the second set by the same score. Tied at 6-6, the third set was decided in a tiebreaker, as Palmieri prevailed 8-6. In the No. 3 singles match,
Emiliia Grydnieva (Kyiv, Ukraine/Optima) took the first set from Peyton Joines, 7-5, and secured the victory in the third set, 6-4.
The defending PAC Player of the Week,
Gabrielle Bassette (Miami, Fla./Miami Country Day School) beat Grove City's Grace Yurko at the top of the lineup, 6-4, 6-1, as the first-year standout remained undefeated in singles competition this fall.
Prior to the match, Allegheny celebrated Senior Day and recognized its two seniors,
Mackenzie Burd (Lewisberry, Pa./Red Land) and
Maria Lounder (Pittsburgh, Pa./Moon Area).
