MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny men's soccer team scored twice in a short span as they defeated Waynesburg 2-1 in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) action Wednesday (Oct. 1).
The Yellowjackets found the back of the net first, scoring on a header off a corner kick in the ninth minute.
The score remained 1-0 until the 36th minute.
Will Gruca (Baden, Pa./Ambridge) got the Gators on the board as he launched a shot from about 25 yards out right under the crossbar. The goal marked his fifth of the year.
The Gators needed just a few more minutes before they took the lead. In the 38th minute,
Lucas Henderson (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) crossed the ball into the box from the far side of the field. The pass found
Arthur Every (Cranleigh, United Kingdom/Glebelands Secondary) who put a quick touch on it to redirect it past the goalkeeper for the Gators' second goal. For Every, that marked his first goal as a Gator.
Early in the second half, it appeared that Waynesburg scored the tying goal of another set piece, but it was disallowed.
The two teams continued to battle throughout the final 45 minutes, but neither would find the back of the net again.
Late in the game, Waynesburg earned a penalty kick.
Cadan Bennett (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) answered the call in net, diving to his left to make the save and preserve the Allegheny victory.
