UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – The Allegheny volleyball team won their eighth straight game as they defeated John Carroll in four sets on the road Wednesday (Sept. 25).
Allegheny won the sets 26-24, 19-25, 25-22, 25-21.
The Gators led early in the first set before the Blue Streaks fought back with a 7-1 run to move ahead, 12-8. The Gators bounced back and would tie the set at 18 following a pair of aces by
Dagney Javes (Frederick, Colo./Dawson School). A kill by
Skyler Fatola (Queen Creek, Ariz./Eastmark) put the Gators in front, 19-18. The teams went back-and-forth down to the wire. Knotted at 24 apiece, a pair of kills by Javes secured the first set win, 26-24.
After exchanging points to start the second set, the Blue Streaks started to gain control. After trailing by six, the Gators brought the set within two points, 18-16. However, John Carroll ended the set on a 7-3 run to tie the match.
Allegheny bounced back with a win in the third set. The Blue Streaks gained a 16-10 lead, but the Gators battled back to tie the set at 18. After some back-and-forth play, Allegheny went on a 4-0 run to gain control. Leading 24-22, a block by
Carly Beers (Warren, Pa./Warren) and Fatola gave the Gators a 25-22 set win.
Once again, John Carroll had a five point lead, 15-10, midway through the fourth set. The Gators fought back, erasing the lead with a 10-3 run. Leading 24-21, a kill by
Sydney Kirk (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton LaSalle Catholic) sealed the nonconference win.
Inside the Box
- Javes had 15 kills, four blocks, and three aces.
- Bawek led the team with 16 kills to go along with 16 digs and three aces.
- Kirk finished with 13 kills.
- Fatola had a career-high eight kills and led all Gators with five blocks.
- Meagan Robare (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) had 29 assists while Izzy Gray (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) had 20 assists and nine digs.
- Jacy Diaz (Barranquitas, Puerto Rico/Gallatin (Tenn.)) had 32 digs while Duru Akbas (Ankara, Turkey/Layton Christian Academy ((Utah)) added 11.
