NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Allegheny softball team's season came to an end Saturday (May 4) as they battled Waynesburg to extra innings in an elimination game at the 2024 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Tournament, but fell 4-3.
After a scoreless first inning, the Yellow Jackets took advantage of a leadoff walk to take a 1-0 lead. The Gators threatened in the bottom of the frame with hits by
Sophia Godzak (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon) and
Audrey Blarr (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence) but Waynesburg got out of the jam.
Similar to the second, Waynesburg pushed a run though after a walk. The score stayed that way until the fifth when the Yellow Jackets tacked on a run following a sacrifice fly.
After putting runners on-base each inning, the Gators cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth.
Cameron Long (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) was walked to start the inning and reached second on a wild pitch.
Aleya Belardinelli (Melbourne, Fla./West Shore) doubled to left center to bring her home.
Olivia Devries (Kent, Ohio/Field) followed up with an RBI single to centerfield, scoring Belardinelli as a misplay got her to third.
Sophia Godzak (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon) tied the game with an RBI single, plating Devries.
The Yellow jackets put runners on the corners off two infield singles in the seventh with one out. The Gators got out of the jam with a Belardinelli strikeout followed by a sliding catch in left field by Blarr.
The Gators put a runner on with two outs in the seventh but was left stranded as the game went into extra innings.
After a scoreless eighth, the Yellow Jackets got back on the scoreboard in the ninth. A double followed by a triple scored a run with one out. A strikeout and a great catch on the run by
Hadley Horensky (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Seton LaSalle Catholic) in centerfield got the Gators out of the inning, but needed a run in the bottom of the inning. Unfortunately, the Gators were unable to produce a base runner as they fell 4-3.
Inside the Box
- Godzak produced three hits and drove in a run.
- Devries had a pair of hits with an RBI.
- Belardinelli drove in a run with a double. Belardinelli also pitched five innings of relief, striking out a pair.
- Phillips, Blarr and Horensky also had hits.
- Madison Hulse (San Diego, Calif./Rancho Bernardo) got the start in the circle, striking out three in four innings.

- Allegheny finishes the season with a 26-12 record, which is the most wins in a season since 2013.
- The Gators are now 4-8 all-time against the Yellow Jackets.
- Devries tied the Allegheny single season home run record with 11 this season.
