WAYNESBURG, Pa. – The Allegheny baseball team was swept for the first time this season in Presidents Athletic Conference (PAC) play, falling at Waynesburg Saturday (April 20).
The opener featured a 5-2 finale before the Gators (19-9, 10-4 PAC) dropped the nightcap to the Yellow Jackets (20-13,13-4 PAC) 12-5.
Game 1 - Waynesburg 5, Allegheny 2
Brent Herrmann (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) pitched in another quality start while taking the hard-luck loss. The starter gave up the go-ahead run in the eighth inning on a solo homer, and the run support was not enough in the opener.
Allegheny found the scoreboard first in the second inning. After a leadoff walk from
Brady Nolin (Cumberland, Maine/Greely),
Jonathan Sharp (Chardon, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) laced an RBI infield single.
Fighting back, Waynesburg took the lead in the bottom of the frame. One run was unearned on a failed pick-off attempt.
Allegheny tied the game at two in the third inning.
Matt Jennings (Birmingham, Mich./Brother Rice) came home when
JD Robinson (Round Hill, Va./Woodgrove) attempted to steal second base and the ball went to the bag.
It was quiet the rest of the game for the Allegheny bats. Three more runs came in to score for Waynesburg in the eighth inning, and the Gators had no response.
Game 2 - Waynesburg 12, Allegheny 5
It was back and forth early in the game, with Allegheny jumping ahead first, then falling behind before retaking the lead. They scored three runs and led by one before the Yellow Jackets ultimately took the lead.
The difference came during the third inning. The Yellow Jackets struck for eight runs on seven hits, busting the game open with all the momentum. They sent 13 men to the plate and the Gators hoisted three arms on the mound during the frame.
Waynesburg added a couple of more runs before Robinson hit his third home run of the year over the left field wall in the eighth inning.
Tyson Bryant-Dawson (Oakland, Calif./Manvel (Texas)), finalized the scoring in the ninth, but it was not enough to overcome Waynesburg's lead.
