Softball Collects Sweep at Saint Vincent

LATROBE, Pa. – The Allegheny softball team picked up a pivotal Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader sweep at Saint Vincent Thursday (April 18).

The Gators won game one 5-3 before shutting out the Bearcats in game two, 5-0.

Game One - Allegheny 5, Saint Vincent 3

The Gators got out to a fast start. After Aleya Belardinelli (Melbourne, Fla./West Shore) singled in the first, Olivia Devries (Kent, Ohio/Field) homered over the left field fence. The home run was Devries' seventh of the season and ninth of her career. However, the Bearcats tied it in the bottom of the first.

Allegheny was quick to regain the lead as Cameron Long (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) led-off the second with a home run to dead center. The home run was her fourth of the season and the 16th of her career. It also marked her 100th career hit.

The score stayed that way until the bottom of the fourth when Saint Vincent tied it with a solo home run.

The back-and-forth continued in the fifth as the Gators regained the lead. Sophia Godzak (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon) started the inning with a single. Arianna Wilkinson (Warren, Ohio/Howland) pinch ran and stole second. A double by Hadley Horensky (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Seton LaSalle Catholic) brought Wilkinson in for the lead. After advancing on a wild pitch, a sacrifice fly by Halle Book (Wexford, Pa./North Catholic) plated Horensky.

Belardinelli held down the fort as the Gators did not surrender another run the rest of the way.

Inside the Box
  • Godzak went four-for-four with two doubles.
  • Devries hit a two run home run and singled.
  • Long hit a solo home run and singled.
  • Horensky had two hits with a double.
  • Belardinelli earned her 10th win of the season, giving up two earned runs while striking out seven.
Game Two - Allegheny 5, Saint Vincent 0

Once again, the Gators started the game with runs in the first. Singles by Samantha Phillips (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon), Belardinelli and  Sofia Genareo (Lakewood, N.Y./Southwestern Central) loaded the bases. Godzak delivered an RBI single to score a run. Horensky followed up with a two RBI hit to increase the lead to 3-0.

The Gators added to their lead in the fourth. After Book reached on an error, Phillips would bring her in.

In the fifth, Devries hit her second home run of the day, this time to center field, as the lead extended to 5-0.

Madison Hulse (San Diego, Calif./Rancho Bernardo) pitched a gem, limiting the Bearcats to just two hits as the Gators picked up a key PAC sweep.
