CLERMONT, Fla. – The Allegheny softball team concluded their trip to The Spring Games in Florida Friday (March 8) with a 9-1 record, splitting their pair of games.
The Gators picked up a 5-0 victory in game one against Emmanuel before falling to Mount Union 7-1 in game two.
Game One - Allegheny 5, Emmanuel 0
Sofia Genareo (Lakewood, N.Y./Southwestern Central) led off the bottom of the second with an infield single.
Samantha Phillips (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) was hit by a pitch and
Hadley Horensky (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Seton LaSalle Catholic) was walked to load the bases. However, the Saints were able to get out of the jam without a run scoring.
The Saints threatened in the fourth with a pair of base runners, but
Samantha Dzierba (Colden, N.Y./Orchard Park) got the Gators out of the jam unscathed.
Cameron Long (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian),
Aleya Belardinelli (Melbourne, Fla./West Shore) and
Halle Book (Wexford, Pa./North Catholic) were walked to load the bases in the fifth. An
Olivia Devries (Kent, Ohio/Field) groundball scored Long as the Gators scored the first run of the game.
The Gators came alive in the sixth. Phillips hit a one-out double to right center, and moved to third on a wild pitch. Another walk to Horensky put runners on the corners. Phillips came across the plate on a wild pitch as the Gators increased their lead to 2-0. Long hit into an error which brought Horensky home for the third run. After stealing second, another Emmanuel error allowed Long to score. Later in the inning, Book doubled to deep left which scored Belardinelli all the way from first.
Dzierba retired the side in the seventh to seal the Allegheny win.
Inside the Box
- Dzierba earned her third shutout win of the week. In seven innings of work, she struck out three while allowing just one hit and three walks.
- Phillips had a double and a run scored.
- Book hit an RBI double.
- Devries drove in a run.
- Genareo also tallied a hit.
- Long scored a pair of runs. Phillips, Belardinellio and Horensky also came across the plate.
Game Two - Mount Union 7, Allegheny 1
The Raiders struck first, scoring once in the bottom of the first. Mount Union loaded the bases with one out in the second, but pop up and a catch by
Audrey Blarr (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence) in foul territory navigated the Gators out of the inning without allowing a run.
The third inning saw Mount Union produce five runs as they increased their lead to 6-0.
The Gators got on the board in the fourth. After a long at bat, Devries blasted a solo shot just inside the left field foul pole. The home run marked the third of her career.
Mount Union made up the run in the bottom of the frame. The Raiders limited the Gators' chances the rest of the win as Allegheny dropped its first game of the season.
