Baseball Sweeps Guilford in Road Twinbill

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Allegheny baseball team earned a doubleheader sweep against Guilford College at Edward H. McBane Field Thursday (March 7).

The Gators (4-3, 0-0 PAC) demolished the baseball, totaling 20 runs on 22 hits. Both games were in the hands of Allegheny the whole way through.

Game One - Allegheny 6, Guilford 4

Play opened with Ryan Dougherty (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) singling up the middle. Two batters later, Tyson Bryant-Dawson (Oakland, Calif./Manvel (Texas)) brought home the Gators center fielder with an RBI single.

Guilford answered in the bottom of the first inning, tacking on a run of their own to even the score at one.

In the third, the Gators put together five runs on two hits to open the gates toward victory. Dougherty led-off the frame with a double, followed by a Matt Jennings (Birmingham, Mich./Brother Rice) hit-by-pitch. On a fielder's choice hit by Bryant-Dawson, the throw to third for the force out from the Quakers' (5-8, 0-0 ODAC) pitcher went into left field, allowing Dougherty to score.

Brady Nolin (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) scored Jennings on an RBI base hit, and another throwing error from Guilford's right-hander was overthrown to first on a sacrifice bunt attempt to score another pair.

Nick Banez (Edmonds, Wash./Meadowdale) brought home the last run of the third with a sacrifice RBI flyout.

The Quakers' attempt at a comeback began in the fifth. They got two runs to cut the Gators' lead to three. They added another in the sixth inning, making it a 6-4 game.

In the seventh, Guilford had the winning run on first with two outs and the bases loaded, but their hopes were denied after falling short to end the early contest.

Game Two - Allegheny 14, Guilford 3

The Gators struck first blood again in the first inning. Nolin brought home Bryant-Dawson to score the first run.

Allegheny piled on three more in the third, before their big inning in the fifth to pull away from the Quakers.

Up 4-1, the Gators had five hits with runs driven in by` Alejandro Samayoa (Katonah, N.Y./John Jay Cross River), Grant Dowden (Ligonier, Pa./Ligonier Valley) and Bryant-Dawson to bring home a handful of runs and make it a 9-1 game.

Allegheny continued to show off their offensive power in the final two innings.

They scored an additional pair of runs in the sixth, followed by a three-run seventh which encompassed a trio of RBI doubles from Bryant-Dawson, Nolin and Robinson.

Guilford scored two runs in the sixth, but the game was already out of reach. Allegheny slammed the door in the seventh with a pair of backward K's from Turner Bubeck (Katy, Texas/Katy Taylor) before saying goodbye to Greensboro.
